Hey all,
I've been entertaining the idea of a scooter. As a grad student living in town, it seems like it would be a cool transportation method and would allow me to keep my car parked during the week. The gas savings seems like enough of an incentive. I'm probably not going to do it right now, as summer's about over and I don't want to ride in the cold. I am seriously considering going for my Ph.D after completing my Master's in December, and I like the idea of a scooter for the warmer months, especially considering that you can pick up a bike for a dance and a song. I know they're not real motorcycles, but I don't plan on trying to be a bad ass with one.
I'll have to get my motorcycle license. Any scooter enthusiasts here? What size would you recommend. I don't plan on riding interstates on one, but would like to at least ride main highways. I was thinking of a 250cc. Any recommendations, tips, etc.?

Edit: I read a little fast. If you're aiming for 250cc, go with the experts: Piaggio, Vespa, etc. Just last week, one passed me at 110 kph on the highway, and I swear he looked more comfortable than I was.
I think the Vespa 250 is called the GTS, I'm not much of a connaisseur.

Aprillia makes an excellent scooter. Their name was built on scooters, actually...the race bikes came later. Then they bought and ruined Moto Guzzi.

You could also look used for some MZ scooters. Fantastic little East German machines, that never managed to gain a real foothold in the US.
Or, if you want to be the hippest cat around on a scooter, BMW is apparently entering the scooter game later this year.
