The search for a new mattress. Ugh.

A couple of months ago I ditched my old interspring mattress that had developed a dip in the center for one of the new gel memory foam iComfort beds by Serta. It felt good but after the first month it got so soft and mushy it was like sleeping on jello. So back it went and I bought a regular interspring mattress by Sealy. Felt great in the store, but boy was it HARD for all night sleeping. Went back to the mattress store, tried some different beds and came home with a Tempurpedic Simplicity bed. Bed feels nice but man oh man does it STINK. I woke up last night dizzy, headache, throat burning... and I'd let it air out for a day. How long do these beds typically smell? Today I have the bedroom window open with the fan running in it to air out the room because it's just awful. I don't know what to do now. Whether to keep this bed and just wait to see if it gets better? Trade it in again for something else? I know beds are just loaded with toxic stuff nowdays, between formaldehyde and the polyurethane and other stuff. Only other option is an all natural bed but those are really expensive. Anyone else have these issues at all? I'm starting to get frantic because I haven't slept much since all this started.

Ours had that funky smell for a couple days. I hope it gets better for you. In our case, it is the best bed we have ever had.

My Tempur smelled for about 2-3 days. I've never slept better, had it maybe 2 years and will never revert back. I was a toss and turner, no more. As a frequent "hotel for work' travelling guy, nothing even comes close.

We got a new organic mattress from European Sleep Works in Berkeley, CA. AWESOME!!

No fire retardant chemicals. As comfortable if not more than the Temper we're sleeping on now (we just moved to a partially furnished house in St Croix and are waiting for our stuff to get here). The box spring is made of rotating arched rails...neato.

I've had a Tempurpedic matress for the last 8-9 years now so I can't remember whether it smelled bad - but I don't think it did.

It's reached the end of it's life now and it's got a permanent dip where my wife and I sleep and a hump in the middle (no sniggering at the back of the class). Even though it's always been comfortable (until now) I find it too warm, so when I get paid at the end of the month I'm going back to pocket springs and ordering up a 3000 spring one

Loved the first few hours on tempurpedic, then I'd wake all sweaty. Returned it on the 30 day eval plan. Got a sleep number. Love it... Been on it a few years.

No. That's Virgin Islands. Virginia is VA. We just moved from Jack London Square at the beginning of June. Man that mattress is sweet. We got the one with all the different independent coils.

I can't seem to get comfortable on the Tempurpedic that we're on now temporarily till our real mattress gets here.

The European Sleepworks beds look great. I just wish there was a less expensive option. Amazing that you have to pay more nowadays for less(chemicals, man-made etc. vs. natural untreated).

Yeah. That's what we thought. It's 90 with 70% humidity and we're getting eaten alive by every flying and crawling insect known to man. No temp relief at night either. It's just HOT here.

Sure miss the east bay climate.

Ours smelled bad for a few days also, but it went away completely. I'll also admit it is a very warm mattress, but here in San Francisco, that is generally a good thing all year 'round.

No crap!! I was just thinking that the other day.

Yeah, their beds are pretty nice. We broke down and got an organic one because our newborn was going to sleep with us. Now he sleeps in the mass produced pack n play. Go figure.

Just an update on the bed. Mattress finally stopped smelling so strong after about 2 months. Would I buy another Tempurpedic? No. I'd go for a cheaper memory foam or standard mattress. Not worth what they're charging for these.

We bought mattresses from a local company called Original Mattress Factory. They make their own mattresses. Nothing fancy. Regular steel coils and materials. Cheaper than name brand. Doesn't smell weird. Quite comfortable and not too firm.

Yep, it smelled for about a week, now its total fine. Amazing bed.

Mine mattress doesn't get hot all that much. I heard people say that but i think newer models are way better at solving that problem.

We have those here too, but I've never known anyone that had one. Should have gone that route, would have saved me a bunch of cash.
