This seems so ripe with irony, I can barely contain myself.

Finally. These guys are so smug. They have the same privileges as pedestrians, but they cruise at like 20 mph amidst crowds and people that it's just a matter of time before they hurt someone or themselves. We've had a lot of complaints on the beach with these guys driving over peoples towels and stuff and they all come back with the same 'I can go anywhere with my segway (so pound sand)' with the 'pound sand' part implied. They're also really dangerous on the pier. I hope this leads to some restrictions on these things.
[/rant]

EDIT: Also my condolences to his family.

when I heard this on the radio, I couldn't help but chuckle a little. But yeah, my condolences. You think he maybe wanted to?

I don't have any ill regard for Segway users...there are VERY few people in my area using them. They're mostly used by Mall security in NYC, from what I've see. I may have seen 2 people used them for pleasure...ever.

Over confidence is probably the single most dangerous factor in vehicle operation. I know it almost got me killed a few times when I was a young driver myself.

RIP to the victim, and I still think Segways are a great idea. If they were $1,500, they would actually be practial to buy.

This wasn't the inventor of the Segway, but an entrepeuner who bought the company recently. When I first saw the article I thought it was more ironic than it was until I realised that this guy was a recent owner and not the inventer. It seems like it was just a tragic accident.

How silly is it that someone would question the safety of the vehicle because a man fell off a cliff? You could just as easily fall off a cliff in a car or on a bike. Much less being an idiot and just falling off sans vehicle. It is obvious what the real enemy is here people: cliffs. Always lurking there just waiting to spring on foolish people who don't pay attention to their surroundings. I think we should ask our congress to ban cliffs in America for the good of all.

I've seen a simiar situation with a guy and his young (3-year-old-ish) son on a small bicycle crossing a busy street. Somewhere safety takes a back seat....and the Segway doesn't have a back seat!

Condolences to Segway-guy's family.

Well, its kind of a limited ban. The genuine article is still legal, its only the cheap imitation ones that are actually prohibited under the offensive weapons act (which itself was odd since I don't really see why swords generally are okay but knives are not!). So in some sense I guess you are right, katanas are subjected to a partial ban, but they are still easy to legally obtain in the UK.

I've never seen one before (not that I've noticed anyway) but I can see how they would be a pain in a public area but useful for practical stuff, whatever happened to walking anyway?

Segway for ridge riding? IMO not a good idea to begin with, I'm sorry he paid the ultimate price for trying it, my condolences.

Cliffs violate my civil rights.

KIDding-ishly

I talked nothing but smack about the things until a friend who survived a brain anyeurism(sp?)had to get one as he couldn't drive anymore. That said, i did recently see him nearly do a head-on w/a car- segway-guy was going the wrong way in a traffic circle/roundabout...

Oh yeah- RIP.

All I can think about when someone mentions Segways is GOB from Arrested Development riding around on his.

While reading this story, I could only picture GOB driving his Segway off a cliff in a very arrogant manner, causing me to laugh quite hard.

Sorry, Segway rider, for laughing at something related to your demise.
