Selling out

Sign in to disble this ad
Wat defines this for you?

recently Ive been seeing more and more bands doing things only for the money

like record store day and the like

also bands having ticket prices like 300 bucks.......which is just greed if u ask me

Also I hate when bands like Anti-Flag, who comprised much of my early punk listenings having censored cd's in walmarts....it really just rips out the emotion you have for the music and the band.

So what do u think makes/defines a band selling out AND/OR what band broke your heart the most?

I really don't understand the whole "selling out" concept. Never have really.

Genesis. They lost all the mojo they had left when "Duke" came out.

Who doesn't like money?

Also by selling in Walmart they are most likely more available to people who would otherwise have no access to their tangible music.

Load and Reload (GrungeTallica). Saint Anger(NuMetalSoundsLikeRawSewageTallica). Death Magnetic (We'reOldNowTallica).

but the album "The Who Sell Out" is funny and amusing, and is not selling out. but when Pete Townsend plays in a Who tribute band at the Super Bowl, I'd say that's selling out.

also, Korn's album untitled, where they tried to do the whole "Metalcore" thing was selling out.

I guess I should say it's when the sound and feel changes. You all know what I'm talking about.

I can get all of Anti-Flag's albums for free and not have to leave my house. You call that no access? Besides all of Wal-Mart's CDs come pre-scratched from the pressing plant.

Also, who is Anti-Flag?

A) When all of your music is AGAINST capitalism and coporations and the like, then you are bowing to them and selling your music in their store. thats selling out. when you had your own record company and then you go major, when your all about the poor'r man fighting back, thats selling out.

B) They used to be a great punk band out of Pittsburgh

C) I define selling out as "selling and or giving up your artisitc integrity so you can make money/get yo thang wet/and basically just not living up to yourself the band or the music"

But for the people who pay for tangible goods it isn't. Just saying, even if it isn't punk.

I guess they are punk, I think I heard a cover of 99 Red Balloons by them?

For sure, I get sick of people saying it to feel "in the know".

+1

"Selling out" is generally just some pretentious BS that elitist scenesters spout on about if a band actually decides to write a hook for a chorus or they sell more than 200 units.

A) I don't think they really had a choice. You know when they make the joke about selling your soul to the devil when signing to a record company? yeah, that's not exaggerating. Once you sign on that line they OWN you, lock, stock, drums and basses.

B) Oh, them.

C) you have to find a balance. You also have to eat. and when it comes down to maintaining your integrity vs. starving to death, well, you figure it out.

Saint Anger. that's all I have to say. but in some cases you are right, it's hipster whining because someone else enjoys the same music they do.

There is no such thing as selling out! It doesn't exist, total figment of your imagination.

I guess for me it's always come down to whether or not I dig the music. I've never really cared what the artist's intention behind a piece of music has been. If they wrote a sappy ballad to make a cool mil, it's never mattered to me if I like the music. Tool, obviously, is quite an artistic band. If they released an album of radio-friendly pop rock songs, sure I'd be disappointed. However, I'd just choose not to buy the album; I wouldn't walk around butthurt for the next 15 years like old school Metallica fans (not pointing fingers at you Thunder, since you mentioned St. Anger, just speaking generally about the Metallica thing ).
