sexual descrimination on CL

Sign in to disble this ad
i know this is stupid, but its ddriving me nuts.

im a perfecctly capable 26 yr old MALE bass player looking for a band, but alot of the ads on craigslist anre looking for female bass players. this is really getting annoying. why does everyone want the gimmick of a female bass player? if youre an all femal band, ok i get it. and im definitely not holding anything against female musicians... but this is stupid. just as stupid as sayinng that the bass player HAS to be a male.

i thought about responding to the ad anyways, but i really doubt i would enjoy being in a band that it so concerned with "image".
... im done.

ahhh, nothing as hot as a female bass player.........
those ads are probably placed by spotty teens, why you care? by doing this they are making you a favour, so you can weed out those stupid ads anyway.
good luck

If it was - then they wouldn't need to advertise so much!!

It's just wishful thinking!

There's a mediocre band out here that has been looking for a bass player for a long time on CL. Eventually they started looking for a female bass player, specifically.
It seemed funny - they couldn't find a good bassist of either gender, so they'd narrow the search down.

So they want a chick bass player, so what? You gonna gripe about not getting a gig at Hooters next?

If it's that big a deal maybe get a sex change. Transgender is really trendy these days. Then you could start a Transgender club on TB and be member number 1.

Yes but not a brightly colored one. Male birds usually have more color differentiation than female.

I agree with the OP.

On the opposite end of this, I've seen ads that specifically ask for male only.

I can understand compatibilty issues and image within a band, but bands who look for a specific gender to the complete exclusion of the other really minimizes their chances of just finding A GOOD BASS PLAYER.

When I was younger (before I knew any better), I did answer some of those ads and every single time, the band only cared about what I looked like. Was I a "beauty queen" or a "man-girl" Hahah. They didn't care how I played.

You don't REALLY want to be in a band like that...do you :/?

P.S.
On a funny-ish side note: one of those ads turned out to be from a guy pretending to be a girl, complete with faked voice. He wanted me to tell him ALL about what it was like being crammed in a little van on tour with an all girl band. PERV! Lol

Btw I've NEVER even been in an all girl band and never will be. Musicianship is what matters. Not a persons gender.

I am in complete agreement, but the irony of the statement you prefaced with just hit me over the head and stole my wallet.

You're both right.
I see it too. I can only explain that by saying that based on MY EXPERIENCE, people tend to not take all female bands seriously. It also reinforces somethintg I am against, and that is looking for musicians of a specific gender rather than looking for good musicians PERIOD. Every all girl band I've known (and I've known many) have set out looking for a gender first. Yes there are some female bands that ARE good musicians and they get their due respect from me. What I'm referring to when I say "all girl band" is more of the former example. The type that put all the emphasis on their gender.
When I first started out, I experienced discrimination and eye rolls left and right when they saw ME show up with a bass. Its been my idea to counter that by just being a good bass player. So the idea of being in an all girl band is just not my thing. Hope that clears that up a bit.

Btw. I did play a gig with an all girl band as a hired gun. I saw right away people looked at us with skeptism and as novelty. When asked to join permanantly, it was a definate no.

Well, they musta heard him because I just went all through the MN C.L. and couldn't even find an add for a girl bass player.

so much for my "Town full of hot bass chicks" fantasy.

*sigh*

A male actually did take a gender discrimination case to court for not being hired as a Hooters waiter. Hooters tried to claim that hiring females for waitresses positions was a bona fied occupational qualification. However, they lost the case because they said that their wings are what primarily attract customers and add value to the organization.

As far as the original topic...many musicians post ads looking for specific qualifications for band members. Some of the qualifications make sense; many of them are just plain asinine.

Besides, girls can't play bass, or any instrument for that matter.
noodling on an instrument takes time away from makin me some noodles in the kitchen, where she belongs.

anyways, sex discrimination is bad and stuff.
