It's easy to forget how great he has been.

Though he already had to be honest!

Was a great player back in the day, but being over 7ft certainly helps!

He may have to take some time off from crime fighting. Heard him say today that he is working on a PhD. Who knew?

Even more important, he was over 300 lbs. athletic. I remember seeing him at an exhibition around 1998, and he made other 6' 10" or 7" men look like children!

I was hoping he'd bring his STEEL costume out of retirement and become a vigilante...

It's one of those things where I find it hard to grasp the weight a guy should be at that height. But aye, he was built, which must have helped, even in a sport that doesn't classically require it!

My only regret was that Kobe didn't retire first.

Right. He was WAY more athletic than Yao Ming could ever hope to be.

He was a great player and a decent guy. A bit playful as an interview, he rarely showed what I would call a killer instinct. I always wondered what he could have been, but he was a great natural talent who wasn't obsessed with himself. The advantage he had physically over most of his opponents in his prime was almost unfair.

I remember when Dumars took over the Pistons as a DM, and he talked about in building the team to have the team ready in the post Shaq era (an admission that no one could beat the Kolbe-Shaq Lakers). Ironically it was those very Pistons that ended up ending that dynasty prematurely. And a barely 6'7" Ben Wallace clearly out played Shaq in that series. I do have to wonder a bit about the feud between Kolbe and Shaq.

I wouldn't say he stayed too long when healthy he still contributed a bit due to the dearth of quality bigs still in the NBA. And while for the most part he wasn't a driven Superstar, but he wasn't soft, and he wasn't a selfish player.

I would rate him in the top five all time of big men.

1) Bill Russell
2) Wilt Chamberlin
3) Kareem Abdul Jabbar
4) Shaq
5) Akeem Olajiwhan (Akeem was a better all around player- but his prime didn't last as long)

Never liked him, but can't argue with 4 rings and all those stats.

Nice post, burk48237! I agree on all points except maybe the order of the top 5, but Shaq sure was a beast in his prime.

I agree with you Burke. Top 5 easily. I would argue top 3. Still, all that said, I'm a big fan of Shaq. He just seems to enjoy life.

It's not even a comparison between who was the more athletic big man when they were both in their respective primes. Shaq wins hands down.
