Anyone ever use one of these to shave? Thinking about picking one up and giving it a shot. Advice to avoid cutting my head off?

I'll stick to my triple edged disposables. I've had it used on me in a barbershop once or twice and it took them a while and I wasn't 'baby smooth' when they were finished. But I have 'black' hair so maybe it just doesn't work for 'me'! |

or maybe they didn't do a good job. when i have it done at the barber with a straight razor it takes them about 20 minutes or so to shave my face.

| | I'm a tumbler, born under punches | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Northern California | | | Years ago I went with my grandfather to his barber shop for a straight razor shave. Very cool experience and a good shave but not all that much better than what you can get with a modern disposable razor. And that's with a professional doing it. So to me, all the cuts and bad shaves I'd get while learning wouldn't be worth the very slightly better shave I'd eventually work my way up to. Especially since it's a time consuming process.
In my mind there's no reason to do it outside of trying to impress other people or some sort of romantic notion about the whole thing. |

He did all the research and found a bunch of online support and advice from other devotees of old school shaving. Now he raves about how great a shave he gets and he's been showing off his "new" antique straight razor to everyone.
Yeah. Whatever makes him happy. It's obvious that it takes a whole lot more time and effort and dedication to get a shave than I'm willing to expend so I'll just stick with my crappy electric.

| | | Well it's pretty tough shaping my sideburns in the right way with the classic disposable 3-blader,so I'm on a quest for a straight razor but they are pretty damn hard to find here |

I normally use a single blade safety - as you require a damn good technique to use an open blade.
Sometimes I use a triple blade for quickness if I'm in a rush (and also for my nads ), however, the best shaves always come from a single blade. Shaving should normally take at least 15 minutes anyway; you gotta heat up your face, through down a small bit of conditioner, wash, lather, shave, exfoliate and then moisturise!
Also, if you have delicate skin, a single blade will be better as less skin is removed with each stroke; with a multiple blade razor you remove a layer of skin for each blade! |

| | | | ok now, see. i wouldnt want a straight razor anywhere near my nads. they would be gone in about 6.5 seconds

My Union Cutlery, Spike Straight razor. At least 60 years old. Just back from service at Ross Cutlery, in the famous Bradbury building. (the Bladerunner bldg)
I took up shaving with a straight two weeks ago. So far I like it a lot.
I've also switched to brush and mug. My can of shave cream had sprung a leak, so I headed down to my local barber supply.
Why does everybody bring up Sweeney Todd, whenever you mention straight razors? I've never even seen that film.

A good straight razor shave will make the next 5-7 days of regular shaving a lot easier with a disposable, or at least it generally does in my experience.
Also, I would definately get a good brush and quality cream to lather your face with.
