U.S. News - Deputies refuse to evict 103-year-old woman

This is a pretty cool story.

Not to nitpick, but it was the deputies and the movers who refused to evict her. Not the bank. But that IS cool!

You may want to rethink your thread title.

The bank didn't refuse to evict anyone.

I saw that this morning. It's nice to occasionally see someone act with a little bit of compassion. Not much of it left in the world it seems at times...

Been in the house for 53 years? How much could they possibly still owe on it?

Glad they got to stay.

I know I'm gonna get beat up for picking on an old lady but the sheriff is wrong for refusing the serve the eviction. It's not his call. He's supposed to do his job without regard for his personal feelings. I'd guess everyone would feel differently if the sheriff refused to evict a bank that wasn't paying rent on its property.

I'm not without a heart. The bank should have a heart here. The sheriff should do his job.

No really, you don't have a heart.

Yeah I agree with you that technically the sheriff should have done what he was told to do, it's his job after all.
But that's why I like the story even more. Someone is willing to grow a pair and do what's right, and not what's simply expected of them. The guy had a conscience. More power to him.
I work in the corporate world where a total lack of conscience is celebrated as a strength. To see someone stick up for what's right is cool as all hell to me.

This is more along the lines of how I feel. Don't get me wrong - it's *great* that this lady can (skip her mortgage payments and) still keep her house. It's nice to see someone exercise some compassion. It'll be interesting to keep an eye on this story, if it progresses at all. Even if she does pass away, then what of her daughter? The daughter will still be an older individual - will they just also let her stay, based only on that fact? Where does the line finally get drawn?
Yes, the bank should've exercised a bit better judgment on this. The sheriff, could have "just done his job", and probably would've been given "the bad guy" label from doing so. Morally, and in the game of life, he definitely did the right thing here. Interesting situation, that we of course only have an extremely minor amount of details/facts on.

I'm still trying to figure out why a 103 year-old has a mortgage in the first place.

I live in the same world and know what you mean.

Where I part company is with the "what's expected of them" part. Sheriffs are law enforcement officers and they have a duty to enforce court orders. The bank should have a heart. Maybe the judge. But when told to enforce a court order I'd really prefer that law enforcement do what they're told.

I suspect the 'protect' part of protect and serve probably made them question the safety of throwing a one hundred and three year old woman out on the street.

Because that 80 year term seemed like such a great idea when she was 30. Super low monthly payments and all.

It's simple. Unsophisticated customers are targeted for what seems like a great deal only find that they are screwed.

My guess is that the house was paid for and they got caught up in some sort of refinancing deal.

It is a travesty of justice that we did not let the banks fail. Instead of bailing out the American taxpayers, the banks were bailed out. The American taxpayers empowered the banks to stick it to the taxpayers who bailed them out.
Huh, what just happened...?
It is a crime that the bankers are getting multi-million dollar bonuses for being failures.
Is it any wonder why the people are starting to protest?
Is there anyone out there who does not believe in conspiracy theories anymore?

She probably bought into one of those reverse-mortgages.
She probably did not think she was going to last that long.
