Should I get an iPod Touch?

Sign in to disble this ad
They seem fun whenever I take someone else's for a spin, but will I just get bored of it? Or will it become as much a part of my life as the music only iPod did? I dig the calendar, and a lot of those misc. apps look fun, but is it more novelty or utility in the (relatively) long run?

I'd get an iPhone, but I really just like for my phone to make phone calls and send texts, and not really do much else.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Do the screens scratch very easily? In other words, would it be worth it to get one of those plastic things to go over the screen? Or is it resilient enough to withstand normal wear and tear?

Also, is there such a thing as a free app? There's iTunes' apps, but are there 3rd party places that have them for free (or at least have a wider selection)?

Thanks guys, any more info on em would be greatly appreciated, as I ordered myself a 16 gig one this afternoon.

Get it, you wont be disappointed. If you jailbreak it, they can do almost anything, including taking your dog for a walk.

Why not get an iphone anyway and then you wont have to carry around an mp3 and phone?

If you have a mac as well it's an awesome combo.

I really really recomend an iPhone, it kills 2 birds with one stone. But, if you really don't want to...then the Touch is probably still the best portable media player ever.

I got one because I had to buy a new computer for my studies, and it was basically free. I like my MP3 player to be an MP3 player. Otherwise, the memory/price ratio of other iPods makes them more attractive, IMO.

The difference it makes to me is that before it I used a Palm to stay organized. Now it's all on the Touch.

But it sure makes bus rides less boring

If we had AT&T service here I'd have an iPhone. I'd love to have it all in one and synced with my Mac at home.

if you get a touch, check out macrumors.com, there may be another one coming out, some new 32gb chips are being made as we speak..

If you have AT&T service, get the iPhone. If not, get the touch. They're pretty amazing tools, and I use mine for absolutely everything except for taking to the gym. I prefer my old Nano for that due to it's smaller size and lighter weight.

My problem with the iPod touch is that it doesn't hold a large enough amount of music for me to justify as my music player. The iPhone, considering it'd do calls/texts/apps (which I know the touch also has) as WELL as music means that 16 is fine. But for my music player, 32 is not.

But if you wouldn't want iPhone and 32 is good for you, go for it. +1 to jailbreaking comment

I swore I would never get and iPod. Then my boss got an iPod Touch, and I realized that it was possibly the coolest thing ever invented that can still fit in your pocket. I've got a 16gb 2nd generation, and it's just so stinking cool. I never leave home without it.

Get one. You'll wonder how you ever did without it.

In addition to the iPod functionality (now easier to use than ever, thanks to the touchscreen), there's the browser (full HTML and usable anywhere where you can get wi-fi - best mobile browser out there), all the PIM tools, and most of the goodies from the iTunes App Store, including some rather good games. Not to mention mobile access to YouTube, a video player, and all sorts of other goodness.

Only downside to me is that I have 50+ gigs of music and another 400+ gigs of video, so I can only sync a selection of playlists rather than my whole collection. I guess it's unlikely that Apple will come out with a HD-based Touch, so I keep my old 60GB iPod Video around for holding my whole music collection.

I carry mine around in my pocket and the screen doesn't have any scratches, it isn't in a case. I have had it over a year. Jailbreak it, everything is free.

I've got a first gen 16 gig.

I love it. I use it to death. Even without jail breaking it, there are tons and tons of free apps on the iTunes store, and even some good ones for $2 or less. The screen doesn't scratch that easily at all... the back of it gets a bit scuffed up, though, but meh. They're great devices.

Regarding apps, the only "official" source of iPhone/Touch apps is the iTunes App Store. There's a huge selection of free apps in addition to the paid ones, including lots of free "lite" editions of the paid apps.

If you jailbreak your Touch (easy), you get access to more in terms of apps through a third-party installer called Cydia, that runs directly on the Touch. There's some worthwhile stuff on there (the Playstation and NES emulators, not to mention the version of Quake, are essential, plus lots of interesting tools for SSH access, filesystem access, etc, if you'd find stuff like that useful) but most of it is basically stuff that wasn't good enough to get into the App Store. Worth a try, since, if you don't like it, you can just do a full restore on your Touch in iTunes and you're back to factory settings.
