Should I re-buy my music collection?

Well I have about 5200 songs in my collection (what do you want I'm only 16), and pretty much all of them are downloaded (some legal, some "acquired") and I'm hopefully going to get a part-time job soon. I've recently rediscovered CDs, after 5 years of exclusively using MP3s. I love CDs now, mostly for the sound quality, but also for being able to have a tangible copy of the album.

So I decided to buy CDs from now on, and maybe occasionally download a legal MP3 album. I have a lot of complete collections of artists only in MP3 form. I was thinking of either buying my entire music collection in CD form, or buying a few favorite albums and some box sets of my favorite artists, and spending the rest of my earnings on new music and other stuff (while saving some cash of course). What do you all think? Is it worth the time and money to get my entire collection in CD form?

That's really something only you yourself can answer. Noone else can know the value of having physical media to you.

For myself the answer is a resounding YES. A lot of the MP3:s out there are just not up to snuff.

MP3 -> CD's
You might (hopefully) be starting a new trend here.
I still refuse to get rid of my cd-collection for the same reasons that you mention.

Some day you might discover vinyl...

If I'm buying music on a physical format I like vinyl

I find a vinyl much more satisfying to own than a CD personally.

Generally I prefer to support bands more directly by buying tickets to gigs and buying merch at gigs. It's ridiculous how much of a cut the record labels take from album sales. Thankfully a lot of the music I buy in physical form is from smaller labels that actually care about their artists.

I did exactly the same thing. You should totally do it. It looks nice, and you get the ablbum art and the inlays. I really like that. I only for 4 more CDs to go then Ill have all of off my library and onto CD.

I'm not even gonna try buying all my itunes collection on CD.

I try to buy the stuff I really like as I think it's fair to show my appreciation for the music by paying for it. I don't like to buy stuff on iTunes though. I did that once, but I didn't like the fact I didn't (naturally) get a physical copy of the album. No booklet in electronic format followed either, which I thought was pretty bad. I enjoy reading the booklets that follow as much as I enjoy having the physical product...

If you are purely interested in sound quality then I think there is nothing to beat CD and I think you're fairly safe that nothing better is going to come along soon - as everybody seems to be obsessed with convenience over quality nowadays!

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I have about 30 gigs of mostly stolen music. I usually buy 2-5 CDs per paycheck.

It's great to have something tangible, and I especially love having the album booklets.

Sheesh, I just worked it out and if I were to do this, it would take almost a year of spending every paycheck towards the CDs... guess I'll limit it to choice CDs and some hefty box sets from my favorite bands.
