my mom got a violin for christmas from a friend but i stand more of a chance of actually learning to play the thing.

should i steal it

Assuming that "steal" means "politely borrow" , then by all means give it a whirl. But probably wait a few months until the newness wears off first.

Non-bass stringed instruments are pretty cool. I always wanted to branch out and play violin but I never got around to it. Guitar is cool I GUESS but I always wanted to play The Devil Went Down to Georgia hoooo boy.

Why don't both of you take a few lessons together? If your mother sees that you are learning way faster than her, perhaps she will offer to let it be "your" violin,... or you may be able to help HER learn how to play it. Think about it, she will tell her friends, "My son taught me how to play!"

....and you were going to STEAL it....shame on you!
