Not in my opinion. If a teacher's drug use is detrimental to their teaching skills then it's usually pretty obvious and they won't get away with it long. On the other hand, if a teacher has an occasional toke at weekends it's not doing anyone any harm. I've had teachers in both of these situations.

no...

why should they?

why should anyone be drug tested?

as long as you are not high at school I don;t see why a responsible adult should not be alowed to enjoy the odd occasional recreational substance. why should that be ground to destroy someones life?

but this is a baited question.

No, at least not randomly tested, but they should have to undergo continuous academic training. I have to certify a certain amount of continuing development in my job each year to be able to continue to do it and I am not responsible for the development of young minds.

Teachers in around here are subject to maintaining continuing education credits in order to keep their license.

and
No they should not be tested.

You would be comfortable having your Child in a room with a Meth addict as long as they could keep it together during instruction ?

No, but if they weren't tested, then you wouldn't know. So what's the harm?

PS Kevin....have you been watching Half-Nelson?

If it doesn't interfere with their job performance that the fact that a teacher uses/abuses drugs is there own business. Would alcoholism be grounds for dismissal next?

Only if the students are drug tested. No double standards, ya know?

Yes they should be. As MM pointed out, I'm not comfortable with a cokehead being in charge of my progeny.

The obvious problem with the drug test is it doesn't differentiate when the drug was taken.

Are you comfortable with a teacher recreationally using drugs during their off time?

I don't know how many meth addicts you've known, but from the few that I've known, I'd be amazed if they could keep it together long enough to open a door, let alone teach a class.

In some workplaces, drug tests are only performed when something happens, i.e. if there is an automobile accident, something to that effect. I think teachers should only be tested if their performance has a noticeable drop.

Absolutely not. Drug use bespeaks volumes about their lack of character.
