The funny thing is I skimmed the article but didn't see the actual number we should be discussing- are we talking 32,000,000 years?

I'm not particularly interested in how old it is.

On the other hand, the natural development of a disease that is almost perfect for controlling the population of a species is absolutely mindblowing.

The 32,000 year figure is incorrect because the earth was formed about 10,000 years ago.

What happened in Africa in the early 20th century that let a mild monkey disease move into humans, mutate to become highly transmissible and then explode into one of history’s great killers, one that has claimed 25 million lives so far?

That's what viruses do. They mutate. They evolve. Sometimes they mutate and evolve into forms that become highly transmissible and kill off many of their hosts. It's a natural part of life on Earth.

A few years back I read a detailed description of how HIV/AIDS is spread & progresses from infection 'till death, and found myself thinking that if aliens wanted to wipe out humans in order to take over Earth largely intact, AIDS would be the perfect weapon.

"This picture shows the structure of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The outer shell of the virus is known as the Viral enevlope. Embedded in the viral envelope is a complex protein known as env which consists of an outer protruding cap glycoprotein (gp) 120, and a stem gp14. Within the viral envelope is an HIV protein called p17(matrix), and within this is the viral core or capsid, which is made of another viral protein p24(core antigen). This picture shows the structure of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV). I saw a comparison of head lice and pubic lice as compared to ape lice. It does appear as though pubic lice isn't that far evolved from ape lice, where as head lice is radically different than both. They are then able to track how long ago the lines of lice split, similar to how long ago the races of bi-pedal hominids split.

Its really interesting, as is the whole series of NPR's Evolution of Man. Its streaming on Netflix, if you follow anthropology its nothing to ground breaking, but I love "preaching to choir" programming. Evolution, science, nova, Sir David Attenborough, Dawkins, Hitchens, Sagan, Feynman... all brilliant.

I find pubic lice to be rather...well..entertaining.

Plus, if you were starving...

i dont know what to think about that. even if i were that hungry, the physics of it all just arent coming together for me here.

my understanding of head vs pubic lice is that pubic hairs grow further apart, and pubic lice have their legs further apart. am i wrong in thinking that the only real difference is their physical leg structure?
