I am so bummed. All spring I have been watching a nest of 4 little birds. The mother bird has been so good about feeding them and they were almost ready to leave the nest. So last night I am heading to bed about 10:30 and was cleaning up around the deck where they were and here is a 5 foot black snake hanging from the underside of the deck with one bird in his belly and another dead in his mouth. He looked at me and dropped the one bird then proceeded to puke up the second! The other two were on the ground alive so I put them around the corner and this morning I see they are OK and hanging out with Mom learning to fly. So 50% is OK I guess. Nature is so cruel. |

That's nature for You. It's a gamble and the survival of the fittest.
The cat that lives with me carried a headless baby bunny for me to see just the other day. Now I don't exactly approve of that, I like to see the mice and rats in her diet, not the occasional bird either. But as far as I know, she eats them all, at least the ones she brings home for me to see.
I have no problems with that, it's really not that long ago when we used to hunt our food. Poor hunting skills meant starvation or death, not only for us, but to our family, pack, whatever.
I can see that as a problem for a person who doesn't touch any kind of animal based food, but for a meat eater like me, it shouldn't pose a problem, IMHO of course.
Regards
Sam |

When I lived in rural Central FL, I would see hawks taking snakes almost daily. Once I was front & center on a red tail doing in a pretty impressive (~5' long) Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
Wasn't even a contest, snake never saw the bird until it had both sets of talons set firmly just behind the head, two seconds later the bird had "de-headed" the snake and was flying off...
...really makes me glad I'm a LOT bigger than a hawk!

But birds nest soup is really yummy.
And before you guys start calling me a mass murderer of little swallows, they do not kill birds while doing that, once the nest is destroyed, the birds have enough time to rebuild the nest before the mating season is over. And yeah, they claim to not destroy the nests once they start hatching eggs.
