So, do I shell out $300 bucks for a Metallica ticket?

So here's my dilemma. Metallica are playing in Melbourne in November, it's the last leg of the World Magnetic tour and tickets are $300 on eBay.

Up until a few days ago I didn't care really. I hadn't listened to Metallica since I was 16, I'm now 20 so 4 years. Metallica was the first band I was ever truly passionate about. I started playing bass because of Cliff Burton with whom I share my Surname, which made the whole thing extra special for me

Anywho, as most teenagers do I moved on from that phase into much heavier, much more complex and much darker forms of metal. I think Opeth are now my favourite band and most of the others are heavier than them.

Then a few days ago I bought a new car and the stereo in the car has no iPod connectivity. Since everything nowadays is MP3 and such my CD collection has dwindled. The only CD I could find was the Black Album. So I chucked that in the car for a few days and found myself feeling a little like I did back in high school. So I've been listening to all the old albums again and feeling more and more like I should give it what it deserves and see them live one more time.

But 300 bucks? Hmmm...

So has anyone here seen them on this tour already? Is it a good show? Was it, in your opinion, worth $300? Aussie Dollars remember.

barring the fact that I sincerely think those dudes are douches of the highest order, I think 300 dollars to see a show is obscene. Save your money for gear and start a better band.

You've been listening to the old albums and you think you should go see today's Metallica?

I'm afraid it's a horrible way to close your experiences of the band. IMO.

300 dollars is a lot of money. Is that money worth the memory of seeing your first ever musical idols live? The question can only be answered by you, my friend.

I loved (and to a degree still love) the Chili Peppers, and although my musical taste has matured over the years, the price I'd pay to see the man who influenced me to pick up the foursting live wouldn't stop at $300. Oftentimes the quality of a thing will not hold a candle to the awesome power of nostalgia.

There is no concert in a stadium (I assume this is where they'll play) that I would pay $300 for. None.

Bring it down to a more moderate size venue (5,000 or less) and there are a couple acts I'd pay that much for--but they generally involve at least one person who's passed away, such as the Beatles or the Minutemen.

Is it 1990?

Then no.

FWIW, I saw the Big Four (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax) concert in a movie theater and while the set they chose was strong, the playing and the attitude were still falling short, IMO. $50 - yes. $300 - H E double hockey sticks naw.

+1, IMO everything after the Black Album has sucked.

I saw Metallica somewhere near the beginning of this tour... I have to say, having only seen them this one time and having only really been a fan of Ride the Lighting and Master of Puppets (these albums MADE me the fan of metal I am today), that I really enjoyed the show. Granted, I only paid $120 CAN for 1st row off the floor (they played in the round, so it was basically like 7th row floor, only I didnt have to worry about looking over anyones head or getting bashed by the pit), but I consider myself a fairly harsh critic. I don't know what the set list is like for this leg, but for fans of the older material they certainly didn't disappoint with the list for the show I saw... Lasers, pyrotechnics and floating coffins OH MY! That being said, $300 is a lot of money to burn if you are not the most die hard fan...

300 bucks a ticket shows nothing but contempt for the fans that bought their albums, merch and other crap, that allows them to live like kings, while those fans agonize over spending the rent to see them on the "one last chance to cash in big"tour

Unless I was positive this was the only chance I'd have to see them live, I wouldn't do it.

Full disclosure, the most I've paid for a concert ticket was roughly $110 USD. Same deal as you: one of my favorite bands, sold out show, ebay prices.

Even if I liked the new Metallica (hey, I do actually like Load/Reload, so sue me! ...just kidding, Lars, please don't sue me, I actually own those cds) I wouldn't pay that high of a price. $300 worth of gear that will last me years is better than a one-night concert experience.
