So, I got a new job today...

Sign in to disble this ad
Same company, different division.

I've posted a few times about what I do, F&B for venues, and that our company's contract was ending Feb 29th in my current building. I was getting pretty nervous about the future.

My choices were to relocate to where ever the next job they had was, or accept my severance and go back into the job market after 18 years with the company, unless I could find a local posting from one of our other divisions AND get that job.

I found a posting and applied, trouble was it is in a completely different line of business. The job is a director of facilities, managing housekeeping, security, grounds, & engineering. Not exactly what I've been doing, but still managing people.

So long story short, 5 interviews later, I got the call today and the job.

Now here for the REALLY GOOD part, the new job is across the street from my condo! It a Monday-Friday job 8-5 with NO WEEKENDS! On top of that, the base salary is BETTER!

I'm gonna have to go out and do some good deeds to pay back this positive Karma

Anyways, just thought I'd share the positive vibe!

Thanks guys! I'm completely stoked! 2 more concerts, 8 hockey games & B&B Circus is all that stands between me and the end of my F&B career. No more explaining why the beer costs $7

I was pretty worried, I have to say, trying to switch careers at 40.

Now I'll actually be available to play on Fri & Sat

That's awesome man! Big congrats to you. Wish I was in the same boat.

Your work place being across the street is the best part imo. My previous job was 6 blocks away from my house. I drove a big friggin truck to work everyday and didn't even notice having to dish out money for gas. Now I work 32 miles away and even though my hourly wage is more than what I made before I'm actually making quite less due to gas. It's killing me!

OK Venue Beer 101 is now in session:

1. Tax is always included in concessions prices, it just makes the transactions easier, and always "on the quarter".

2. My tax here is 5.0% State Sales Tax & Restaurant Sales Tax is 6.5% more.

3. My "rent" back to the city is 40% of my gross sales, less tax.

4. Most venues use NPOs for stand labor, their cut is usually 10%.

5. Direct expenses (napkins, paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc) average 4% so that equals $.251

6. Support costs (insurance, performance bond, business & Liq licenses, etc) average about 5% or $.313.

Ok that covers costs by %, let's make this a practical example

$7.00 price less

$0.722 in Taxes
$2.511 in Rent payment to the City
$0.627 in pay to the NPO
$0.251 in Directs
$0.313 in Supports

So that leaves me $2.576

I pay $64 a 1/2 bbl for draft and serve a 24oz beer. A 1/2bbl contains 1984 oz beer without waste, that's .032 cents per oz. At 24 oz without waste (and they waste a crapload of beer) that's .768 for the beer & the cup costs $.11. Our average yield from a keg of beer is 90% (foam, pour offs, line cleaning, etc) so the effective cost of the beer is .84.

That makes it $2.576 less $.84 less $.11 = $1.626

Now from here I cover my local overhead, warehouse workers, concessions supervisors, vault workers, office staff & myself as well as the amortization of the $275,000 investment over 5 years for the equipment we bought at the execution of the contract.

We run about 400 events a year between the arena, the performing arts center & the convention space, 60 of those events are worth opening for, concerts, hockey, boxing etc. the rest are break even or worse. In 6 years I've been here for every arena event save 2...

If I haven't bored you to death yet....you can see why I'm excited to get out of this business

That's my man! BTW, Kelly Clarkson is actually pretty cute when you see her in person. One of the few perks here, my office is next to the dressing rooms.

Most chicks are pretty cute when you're peeping at them through a hole in the wall.

Bwaaahahaha, nope the dressing rooms are across the hallway, I bumped into her as she was coming out to head to the stage, Reba is a pretty hot ol' cougar herself.

My favorites so far are the asian gymnasts that come with the circus
