I was at Hudsons today and bought a Sony Vaio AR series laptop. 17 in. display, at least 240 GB storage, 3 GB RAM, Plays Blu-Ray, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. New.
$545 after tax.
These things go for $1,700 (base) new.
My only concern is it having Windows Vista (Home Premium). In the near future, I'd like to use this computer for recording.
I had Logic Pro in mind. Do you think it'll be fine?

Give vista a few years for them to work all the bugs out, and than maybe...MAYBE it will be a fully usable OS. Until than, hit up the XP pro or even media, if your looking into recording.

And the locking mechanism for the monitor doesn't work (It still folds down fine). I took it to Best Buy and got the Geek Squad to boot it up for me. It turns out, it was a floor model in one of their stores, and a good thing, because the guy had to remove a password. He then removed the BB program. But it boots up great. I've ordered an AC adapter and will fool around with Vista when it gets in. If I don't like it, I'll load XP Pro. I just don't want to start loading my stuff on the laptop and then find out that something doesn't work with the OS. |

Unfortunately they don't make the new Logic for Windows. |

What a great score. Sorry I have nothing to contribute to your question. I just wanted to find out about the sweet deal you got.

XP will be dead soon, so I wouldn't downgrade unless you have applications that aren't Vista compatible, which aren't as many as they used to be. I've done home recording on all my Vista machines with no problem.

To add fuel to the fire, many are saying SP1 screwed it up even worse. I ditched Vista long before SP1 came out, and have zero desire to try it again. It's not just a bunch of doofus bassists saying it sucks (like me ). Google it, it's the new ME for chrissakes!

It was also accompanied by mass hysteria. Then the companies caught up with their drivers and everything was fine. The same thing happened with Vista. In fact the single largest source of crashes in Vista has been Nvidia drivers. THAT is well-documented and googlable as well.
Vista works great for me (far more satisfying than ME ever was ) and IMO it makes no sense to roll back to a previous generation OS when buying a new computer.

| | Registered User | | | | | There are no well documented issues with Vista. There are a bunch of blowhards out there who dislike Vista, and now hating it has turned into a cult phenomenon. Vista has some quirks, like ALL operating systems. There are a few things that MS should have done differently, as with all OS's. But it is solid, and it's not going anywhere. If you have the right hardware, it can be quite nice to run. I use it for work and play, and have deployed literally thousands of Vista desktops via automation processes on corporate networks. It's a killer OS. If you stick with XP (barring any legacy application needs), then you're holding on to the past, one that is soon to die.

I wouldn't really bother going back to XP, sure Vista has it's quirks but they'll be worked out, they've already improved some of the ones that had plagued me in XP. Though I am posting this on an XP machine, I just use it on my laptop and I like it.
