My wife and I decided to go for some genetic background testing a few weeks ago when they (23andme.com) were running a special on testing in honor of "World DNA day". Has anyone here ever done that?
Got the results back.... no surprises for me. Genetically, I'm an incredibly boring Eastern European who's DNA seems to be predictable right from the dawn of prehistory.. I thought that maybe there would be some Asian bits in there from the Mongol invasion periods but no.. yawn.
But my wife, well we already knew she was part Asian and the other half being a mix of native Costa Rican and few other flavors thrown in but we also found that she has a very large amount of European and African ancestry, that's pretty damn neat! So she's pretty much the planet rolled up into one person.. gotta love the Caribbean for the amazing melting pot that it is!
We also found out what illnesses/diseases/etc we may be carrying genes for which was really neat. But I'm going to take those results with a grain of salt as I've heard before that these tests aren't always right on the money.
They were also able to ascertain our haplogroups. I understand what a haplogroup is on a very basic level, but I'm not quite sure how it pertains to your ethnic/racial/cultural identity.
I'm U2e1 on my mother's side, I2a2b on my father's side. Using my fathers side as an example, 23andme.com are telling me that the highest concentrations of that haplogroup are found in Sardinia and the areas of Slovenia and Croatia, am I right to then understand that that's where the haplogroup originated from and was carried throughout Europe, Siberia, the Middle East and North Africa? I'm just not sure how to read that. Anyone here good with that sort of thing or can direct me to an "Idiots Guide to DNA Deciphering"??

On a more serious note, I was actually hoping that it would maybe have revealed some ethnic make-up more than it did. I already know that my family is mostly Polish, some French, but I was hoping to be able to learn if there was any German, Italian, etc etc but this test doesn't really do that since it's purely genetic.
If anything, it's very useful at illustrating just how absolutely illusionary nationality and ethnicity is. We pretty much are all blended ancestry of one sort or another.

Of course, you may not be able to read this since you are now hovering 6' about your computer.
And yes, these are not the droids you are looking for.

it is very eye-opening on the whole subject. there is a part about genetics. it claims that the genetics that separate us by "race" came to us very late in the evolutionary process. it seems race is very superficial. heck, we are all mostly monkey.

We did that recently, my wife is adopted and has wondered about her heritage and about whatever hereditary diseases she may be succeptible to. On my side, it confirmed some obscure and very old family history that I always wondered about. And no, I'm not descended from Jack the Ripper, I just look like him...
