Just to clarify, this was over the period of about a week.
I had seen 4, 5, and 6 when I was young and didn't really remember them too well, so I watched those first. But after watching 1 and 2 again, then 3 for the first time, it seems like they had too much explaining to do to tie everything up in a nice little package for it to lead up to 4. Here's a few of my *** moments.
1) What the hell is with the robot that coughs like he has a cold and can duel with lightsabers? Almost as stupid an idea as Jar Jar IMHO.
2) C-3PO and R2D2 knew Luke's uncle! In Episode 2 he was at the Skywalker ranch when Anakin went there to find his mom. However, when he is buying the droids from the Jawa's in episode 4, he asks him questions like he's never met him before?
3) I wonder if he considered even using real actors at all with the amount of CGI that was used. Between Darth Vaders inception, Palpatine's electric moment, Jado Fett, and all the acrobatics in the lightsaber duels, the CGI was poorly done I feel and took me out of the movie environment everytime it happened.
Personal opinion, I prefer the muppetized Yoda. |

As far as the movies themselves go, best not to try to over-think them. They're great and all but far from perfect.

Every subsequent movie is a cheap copy.

1) What the hell is with the robot that coughs like he has a cold and can duel with lightsabers? Almost as stupid an idea as Jar Jar IMHO. | grievous was not a robot, he was a creature who was nearly killed and put into a cybernetic "suit". they kept him alive because he was some kind of military tactical genius. sorta "darth vader take 1". | 3p0's memory is wiped at the end of episode 3, before they go with bail organa to alderaan with baby leia. this was supposedly to protect everyone involved - 3p0 had a habbit of not being able to keep his mouth shut. Quote:

| i agree on the muppet yoda point, but i also think that may just be because that's the way we first met him. and, tbh, when i saw empire strikes back in the theaters, i thought the muppet yoda was a little cheezy and unbelievable, and i was young enough to look past that kind of thing then.

Originally Posted by armywalaby 1) What the hell is with the robot that coughs like he has a cold and can duel with lightsabers? . | He is coughing because at the end of the first animated "Clone wars" series, Mace Windu force crushes his "iron lung" so it is not working properly, therefore, hard to breathe right. R2 was so persistent to stay with 3PO... upon the first purchase of the (faulty, bad motivator) R5D4 unit at the Jawa sale, to be its replacement because he needed to carry out his mission to call Obi Wan back into the fold, as the rebellion was gathering and he had to also get Luke into the fold, as Luke was the "New Hope".
It's why R2 went off looking for Ben...he knew Luke would go after him, separating him from his Aunt & Uncle who would surely be ratted out by the Jawas when the Empire came looking for them, R2 knew they were after them...
and lastly, Uncle Owen may not recognize R2 as R2, because he only saw him briefly and there are 1000's of astromech droids that look alike, and may not recognize 3PO because 3PO now had gold plating. Last time Owen saw 3PO he had tarnished grey plating.
Everyone likes the puppet Yoda better. Doesn't make it better, I just don't think the CGI gets the surrounding actors into believeable interaction, like even a puppet can.

1) Lucas originally intended for Christopher Walken to play Han Solo.
2) David Lynch was offered the chance to direct return of the Jedi. He turned it down to direct Dune instead. (He considers the film version of Dune to be his one failure as a film maker)
3) It's true. All Star Wars fans hate Star Wars. I'm one of them. The whole thing is like one giant homage to various western, samurai and sci fi pieces. The jedi are a combination of Samurai and the Bene Geserit from Dune, R2 and 3P0 and the entire plot of episode IV are similar to the Kurosawa movie "Hidden Fortress", Etc.
4) Wookies do not live on Endor.

I liked the first three or last three or whatever. When I was 12 and later when I was baked. Since I am no longer either, I have lost most interest. But the modern three movis were horrid. Crap acting was a staple ofthe franchise, but the newer movies could have been cast better using soap opera extras. Even decent performances were overshadowed by wah-nakin skywalker, pandamay, gimmicks like jar jar and that flying bug thing that raced pod cars. Awful. CG and a huge budget, neither of which the original had, can never replace a solid script and decent directing. Instead of computer fixing your lousy shots, shoot it better.
I still prefer them to 9 hours of mythical and sexually ambiguous creatures walking, fighting, walking, eating, walking, celebrating, walking, having ceremonies, walking, casting spells, walking, having flashbacks to explain what couldn't be adapted to script from the books, walking, giving long winded braveheart-esque speeches, and finally walking. I won't name names so I can avoid an all out nerd-war.
And Jean-Luc Picard was the better captain, but Spock over Riker anyday.

-In movies 1-3 the jedi were far more capable, the overall technology was far superior and the final crossover of the very hi-tech enviroment and the very crappy death star under construcction, plus darth vaders suit sorounded by ubber awsome everything was what made the whole prequel saga a huge turd to me. |

| | Pat's the best! | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: Northern Virginia, USA | | | I recently watched the first three and I enjoyed them. The plot and dialog is almost cringingly childish at times, but who cares, these are just good old movie serial fun, they tell the story of Anakin Skywalker's rise and fall and return in a fun interesting way. Specifically upon further viewings of episode III, the conflict that drove Anakin to the dark side is more and more believable. There is so much going on with him, so much conflict that it's understandable how it becomes unbearable to him.
This is not Academy Award winning drama here, it's good ol' sci-fi fantasy fun, and as such is great.
Oh - and the CGI Yoda in Episodes 2 and 3 COMPLETEL PWNZ the puppet Yoda in episodes 5,6, and 1. |

It has some good moments and some bad moments, but it's Star Wars so it's good to me. Try not to take it so seriously. It's entertainment for entertainments sake. I still have all my action figures and various ships (original and new releases), etc., in a box somewhere. I plan to take them out when my son is old enough and hope he can enjoy them as I once did. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
