So I went to the grocery store...

...and I filled my cart with groceries. Then I went to the checkout counter, the cashier scanned all of the items - and guess what? I WON!! I got to pay for them and take them home. I really needed the groceries, and didn't mind paying for them, so I was thrilled that I won them.

I do not understand E-bay. Why do people buy things on E-bay and then say they won them?

Weird.

He's just relating buying some in person to buying something on eBay.

Purchase an item versus winning an item.

I know, I was agreeing with him, I never got it that someone "wins" an item on eBay, as your still paying for it.

I was under the impression that it's 'cause you're bidding in an auction. You "win" against the other people bidding against you.

'Course that's all changed with the inclusion of Ebay stores and "Buy it Now", but the basic principle is still there.

If you had to bid on your groceries auction-style, then you could say that you "win" them.

That could really suck..."Sorry kids, no dinner tonight. Daddy didn't win any groceries today. G'damn last-second snipers!"

On eBay it's "Buy It Now" not, "Win It Now". If you hit the BIN button, you're not a "winner".

You obviously have never tried to snipe something right at the last seconds of an active auction

Yeah, you're right… I've never bought or sold anything on Ebay. Actually it’s a wonder that I'm online at all.

I see, people "won" the auction… I guess I kinda get it. It still sounds funny to say the you "won" something that you actually bought.

You win the auction, not the item.

did you place a bid on the basket of groceries?
did everyone who was interested in THAT cart of groceries also place bids?

An auction is a process of buying and selling goods or services by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the winning bidder.
The practice of winning an auction dates back to 500 BC

I'm pretty sure you can buy groceries on eBay now. I know someone once sold a piece of toast one of the guys from 98 Degrees took a bite of. Now there's something you can't buy at the grocery store.
