So, I'm headed to NYC and...

I was hoping some of the members here might have some suggestions on clubs, bars, big concerts, local music, or any other random fun places to hit up while I'm there. I'm staying with a group of people up at this place, Widget Hostel in Manhattan from May 9-12.

So, how about it Talkbassists, which dens of foul sin and iniquity should I be hitting up while in NYC?

I personally am like all kinds of music. I've been pretty big into flamenco for awhile though, so live flamenco playing would be hot. Uhm, psychadelic and progressive rock and metal are a big thing for me so long as there more of the wonky composition and weird rhythmic kind rather than the ridiculous virtuoso guitarist and annoying falsetto singer kind.. I also like spoken word poetry and hiphop so long as the MC is intelligent and has good flow. As far as clubs go, I'm apathetic. I don't really like club music, I usually end up going with a group of people to have fun, so I guess so long as its not square dancing, I'm happy. Also, since I'm a student, bars with cheap, good beer would be much appreciated. Anything unique, and not well known is cool too.

Really? No one wants to promote a favorite bar or a friend's band or something?

There are just too many places to list here....

I enjoy hanging out below 14th street over by avenues A & B. Lot's of places for the 20 something crowd....some cool, some not-so-cool.

You can just walk up and down the blocks on a friday and saturday night and walk in to whatever place catches your eye....don't like it....walk out and go next door.

Oh, that reminds me....check out Virgin Megastore in Union Square (14th street)

I was just in there Friday night...they're closing and everything is on sale and must go.

& keep on walking to Whiskey Ward

McSorley's is strictly for tourists & college kids who don't know any better. Resting on their laurelsfor over 100 years now. There will always be the hold outs who insist on how great it is but they are not from around here. Locals know better.
Check out the Village Voice (free local paper, also online) for club listings. Bleeker St. East of 6th Ave. has 8 or 10 places for live music. Yelp.com is always good to check out
Shorty's on 9th Ave has a special twice a day 4-7 & 11-1AM get a small Cheese steak sandwich & a Pint of beer for $8. They've got 20 beers on tap. I know way too many places, you can PM me if you are looking for some thing specific. Enjoy NYC!

I'll admit, I was a tourist when I went. But if you don't know any better, it really is a killer place to hang out for the night. It still is a really old joint.

while in nyc , theres so much to check out! one thing i highly reccomend is going to music row on 48th street in manhattan, you can also check out the sadowsky shop in brooklyn, get some of the best pizza in NYC (L and B Spumoni Gardens in bensonhurst for square slices, Di Fara's Pizzaria on Ave J in brooklyn), check out the MoMA, check out south street seaport, times square, chelsea piers...the things to do in the greatest city in the world are basically endless

It is THE oldest.....

....but that is often disputed between McSorley's and Pete's Tavern.

That's literally across the street where I used to live for 4 years back in college. It's a really cool place to see a show now, it used to be an off broadway theater.
