Gas is skyrocketing again... will easily be $4 a gallon nationwide by Memorial Day.

That ought to be fun.

Boohoo, it is currently $4.40 a gallon here in Canada. We drive just as much and gas is always more expensive. The US has the lowest gas prices of any G8 country, count $4/gal as a blessing.

Ditto, also gas isn't really an economic indicator.

I don't know what you mean by "indicator"... But when it impacts disposable income and contributes to inflation in other commodities (e.g., food, which is also skyrocketing), it most certainly has an influence.

Who knows whether it's going to be higher or lower by then? It depends almost entirely on what happens in the various Middle East countries in turmoil right now. Memorial Day is more than three months away.

Quick..everyone run out and buy electric cars and get rid of all your SUV's and pickups. I need a new Dodge Ram, so hopefully this will help drive the prices down on one.

Please delete if this is too political:

My take on this is that, if we value democracy, and we're seeing it coming to the middle east (finally!), then we should accept that the cost may be higher gas prices for a while.

I just gassed up about an hour ago at the local Hess. $3.23/gal. $20 gave me a bit over 6 gallons. Guess we'll all have to drive accordingly for a while.

I was trying to come up with a way to basically say the same thing.
meh, I keep on typing up explanation after explanation but it's all too political. Let's just say that I agree with you.

Petroleum prices are felt by US consumers because we drive cars. Elsewhere in the world, it is used to generate electricity, and goods including fertilizer. I think that we will feel the increase in food costs as everything from running the farm machinery, transportation and fertilizer costs increase.

Our way of life is about to change..

My Jeep Grand Wagoneer gets 12 MPG. Gas prices are always a concern for me. I'll believe it when I see it. There are too many rumors that gas will be this much by this date and so on. We haven't seen $4 a gallon since 2005 in Maryland, yet I hear rumors right before every holiday that gas is going to skyrocket and it usually drops in price. -Luke

I put out the workings in another thread recently, either way, fuel here is ~$7-$8 a gallon.

Cry me a river.

We drive cars just as much as you, only our gas is $1/gal more than in the states. Cry me a river, we have been dealing with it for years. The cost of living in the US is much lower than in Canada or any other G8 nation.

You also live in a country that's smaller than some states. -Luke

People are still smart enough to try and live within commuting distance of their jobs

(or do most Americans tend to drive across the country every weekend?)

How can you compare the cost of living in America when every state varies A LOT?

Yes, but the US has a much larger economy, and a hiccup here is a major hurl elsewhere. As far as my job it directly effects it in two clear ways. One, I'm on the road in sales, my cost of going to work skyrockets. Two, my business is outdoor sporting goods and when people aren't using my product, my business shrinks. So I'm looking at doing less business while it costs me more to do it. Considering I barely got by last year I am not looking forward to this spring at all.

In the meanwhile we have a ridiculous illegal unscientific moratorium on offshore drilling.

For the record, I have no problem with supporting people calling for Democracy in the ME, it is the other self imposed effects on Gas prices I take issue with.
