So the other week, I thought of something new for hipsters to do...

...go back to using Windows 3.1. It seems like it would be "deck" and the hipster thing to do.

Haha, that's awesome. Unfortunately, the reissue has modern specs. It's kinda like a blue line SVT reissue with a solid-state MOSFET power section and a MIDI-controllable, programmable preamp. Still, that's very cool.

Also, I'm old enough now to complain about the young whipper-snappers who can't appreciate the simplistic beauty of DOS.

For what it's worth, most young coders I know prefer VIM (or similar alternatives) to graphical text editors.

Yeah, I figured, as always with the hipsters, it was more about the irony.

We have a spectrometer that is controlled using a Windows 3.1 system.

I have to spend a fair bit of time showing students how to use it. I still get a kick when they freak out at a floppy drive making noises . . . it also makes me sad, because I didn't think I was that old

I remember having to install windows 3.1 it was something like 11 floppies and you always ended up having floppy 9 or so being corrupted and having to find another copy!

It was messy!

I'm a bit of a hypster myself - and I honestly wish its hardware weren't updated. Also, nobody (at least no hypster) spells it with an "i" anymore, that's just too mainstream.

Heck, it works

More a problem of funding, it isn't officially part of the teaching labs, the academic who used it left many (many) years ago. So it's a working relic, nobody has actually taken responsibility for it even though nobody wants to get rid of it, and because it doesn't fall under any specific budget, there is no money to replace it!

(and it isn't one that could be replaced with the likes of those funky wee Oceans Optics USB ones sadly)
