So there was an accident at work....

Sign in to disble this ad
I work in a machine shop making small parts for a robotics company. On thursday I was training the new guy ( Im 17, new guy is 23. It was odd) He was having some trouble with the hori band-saw. Its a hydrualic one, So it has a cylinder that lowers the blade onto the metal. This cylinder either had a leak, or the lockout was on, cuase this sum***** wasn't going down at all. So he calls me over the look at it, As I am reaching in to shut off the lockout, the blade lowers onto my arm. The blade was halfway through cutting a piece of cast iron, So it was hotter then hell. Blade touches arm, I don't feel anything, I smell burning and a sizzling sound, Look down and the blade is sinking into my arm.

3rd/4th degree burn, and a badass scar that will never go away. Turns out the bandsaw was infact broken, There was a burst in the hyrdo hose for the lowering control. Since It was my fault, I failed to follow basic procedure (Check the hose, first!) I am placing no liability on the shop, It was my own damned fault. So now I got a messed up looking arm now.

Aren't there laws about children under the age of 18 working in potentially dangerous work situations?

In the US, OSHA set requirements. Yes.

You can't even use the roast beef slicer at Roy Rogers unless you are 18.

Does this strike you as a potentially dangerous work environment?

At the risk of sounding condescending, you shouldn't be exposed to dangers like this in the workplace.

Ouchie... That looks like a doozy. Sorry to hear about your misfortune, man.

But on the plus side, that's going to be a pretty rad scar. Remember, chicks dig scars.

I used one of those in the High School machine shop. Government funded use of dangerous tools.

I know, its somewhat dangerous, BUT, I wanna become a machinist, I volunteered to do alot of things. I was in a hurry to fill an order and lost thought for a minute.

On the good side, this was the first injury that shop has had in 3 years. Last one someone got shocked by a fualty ground on a welder...

redemption bass - All the ladies were scared of it at first, It had blistered up huge and it stunk of death. Now that it looks somewhat better, they are all " awwwww corby, I hope you get better *insert fellatio*"

I wish.....

OUCH!! I've worked as a machinist since I was a teenager. I have lots of scars but still have all my fingers. Burns suck and hurt like hell I swear by crazy glue for first aid, it keeps me in business these days!!

As far as a law suit, you could probably sue but.........come on! Chalk it up to experience, don't do it again and keep your job. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger Pain is the evil leaving your body.

Wow, thats intense.

I actually spent 2 years for a Mechanical Engineering company working as their shop manager. I programmed a CNC mill most days, but looking after the machine shop, fab shop, and workers I saw a couple close calls.

You have to be careful in that environment.

Doing something like that only ensures that he will never do it again. Krazy glue is the ebst thing ever when you work with sharp stuff. We have some in the first aid kit at work.

Wasn't Krazy Glue invented for medical use for either WWII or Vietnam?

Invented for medical use, no idea when or for what. Gets used all the time in hockey.

I think it was invented for surgeons who needed to seal cuts that were impossible to stitch.
