So, there was a shooting right in front of my kitchen window tonight

I was sitting in my apartment watching TV with my wife earlier tonight and we were startled by a loud bang. We both looked at each other and said "was that a gun shot?" I muted the TV and heard yelling coming from outside my kitchen window (we are in the basement apartment so our kitchen window is street level of our gated community) and within minutes I saw red and blue lights. I went to the back bathroom and peaked out of the window to see a man laying about 3 feet in front of our window being treated by the paramedics. It turns out this guy was shot in the leg. The weird thing is that this guy does not live here and according to the cops is from a different state. Apparently, none of the people involved live in the city either. Why was this guy shot in front of our building (we live in a decent part of town) when he does not live here? Was he here trying to rob people or using the parking lot for a drug deal that went bad? My wife and I think it has something to do with our shady drug dealing/using neighbor who has been going in and out his back door lately (were they coming after him?). The cops told me it was drug related and I should not worry for me or my wife's safety because these guys weren't going to be back. The man who was shot is in the hospital but my neighbor is nowhere to be found. It was very surreal seeing a large puddle of blood just feet in front of my window. I always felt so safe here. I have so many questions about why this happpened and I can't help worry about my wife being home alone at night while I am out at gigs. Our apartment has an alarm system that is off, but we will turning it on ASAP. This kind of incident just makes me lose faith in humanity. I can't understand why people could be this violent.

Luckily I did not witness it aside from hearing the shot because the AC and the TV were on. If the bullet had missed the guy's leg it could have easily gone into my house through the window. I feel very fortunate that neither of us were in the kitchen at the time.

I'm rather amazed that people still have faith in humanity.

Glad to hear that you and yours are well.

I think I still have faith in humanity, just not the humanity within 500 sq ft of my home.

I'd hate to think of what might have happened had you lived next door to a drug dealer in a part of town that wasn't decent? I'm glad your OK, Unfortunately stuff like that can happen almost anywhere now a days. Be thankful that you live in a state where you can respond with equal force.

Joel,

Sorry to hear that...in Indianapolis? I hope all is well otherwise...

The day I moved to New York I was unpacking in my room when I heard about 6 gun shots outside. It ended up being a drug dealer who was murdered about 20 feet from my building entrance. Not the warmest welcome to the city...

I lived for six years in a crap neighborhood and my house was right in the middle of gang territory. I heard gunshots every month or so and there were always fights going on. There were four murders within one block of my house during the time I lived there.

The neighborhood I just moved to in Rockford, Illinois is even worse.
