I have had a CPAP machine for several years now. I was so whacked out from not sleeping properly that it affected work and family life. I fought with it for quite a while but now when the mask goes on, it's nitey-nite time.

Is that the nose-mask thing? A guy had one at a men's retreat I played at a couple of weeks ago- sounded like someone was vaccuuming next door, but the dude slept like a rock.

Edit: (googles CPAP machine...)

I'm not morbidly obese, so no, I do not have sleep apnea.

Obesity is one possible cause of sleep apnea, but there are others.

Granted there are other potential causes but being fat sure seems to be the common denominator in the waiting rooms I see.

My dad has used the CPAP machine for the past few years. I don't know how he sleeps with it on, but somehow he pulls it off. I'm pretty sure he doesn't wear it every night, though.

I have a good friend who has it, and this is her experience also. It (CPAP) has been a life and relationship saver for her. Huge benefit.

I wouldn't go around provoking people in a sleep apnea thread, but to be fair, the majority of sleep apnea cases are caused by obesity. Sleep apnea that is purely neurological is pretty rare. Though occasionally, structural deformities are responsible. Certain other factors not relating to weight increase the risk, but overall sleep apnea is rare in people with a normal BMI. CPAP will very often solve the problem, but lifestyle changes should always be recommended. Though most patients will just go for the CPAP.

My father is not what I'd call morbidly obese- in fact he's in very good shape for 87. He is very active, walking daily & hits the gym regularly. I'm sure he's 10-15 lbs overweight at the most.

I was tested and stopped breathing an average of 82 times per hour, which is more than once per minute, and an average of 17 seconds, per episode, the longest being 36 seconds. Kind of scary, especially since I used to wake up with crazy headaches and I couldn't understand why. They said my oxygen levels dropped down to around 75% during the night and that was why I woke up with pounding headaches. My settings on my my CPAP is 18. It's like having a vacuum cleaner shoved up your nose and set on reverse, but hey, it saved my life. CPAP FTW!!!

+1. My wife, who is very petite (5'3", about 115 lbs), has sleep apnea. She doesn't do well with the mask either, but uses it when she has to.

Personally, I think it's very poor form to go into a thread asking who has sleep apnea and intimating, after several people have answered in the affirmative, that they must be morbidly obese.
