Ok, not terrible, but I have to get your attention somehow. :-)
But seriously, my wife had been having bad stomach pains for a few months. We tried to manage them with otc medications, trying not to eat before bed, balancing our diet, etc.. Nothing worked, so we went to the gastroenterologous. (Probably spelled that wrong).
As it turns out my wife is lactose intolerant. Weird seeing as how she tolerated and even enjoyed lactose all her previous 37 years of existence. She may also have ulcers.
Is anybody here lactose intolerant? This is a complete lifestyle change; I feel bad for her. I never had any idea how many foods were made with milk. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks for any help guys! |

To be honest, it's not biggie once you get used to dealing with it. His used to be pretty bad but now so long as he takes a lactase enzyme (which you can even get over the counter) prior to eating anything with dairy in it, he's actually ok. Every now and then he'll slip up and end up spending half the day in the bathroom but in his case at least, it really isn't even a big deal.

If you like tater tot hotdish, it can be made using creamed corn instead of a cream soup. No dairy in creamed corn. It helped get us by, having something "normal" tasting that my daughter would easily eat.

1. Rice Milk - This is my favorite.
2. Almond Milk
3. Very Vanilla Silk Soy Milk.

You all make it sound like lactose intolerance is a condition or a disease?
Slept through the biology classes?
Especially those where mammal developement was taught?

Lactose intolerance is normal. We're only supposed to really be fully comfortable with milk and milk proteins until about the age of four. After that EVERYONE is expected to be at least somewhat lactose intolerant.
Mostly you'll see the real extremes. There will be the guy who has explosive diarrhea after a bite of cheese, or the gal who has room clearing flatulence after an ice cream cone.
But you won't notice you're also seeing the less extreme cases, like the guy who noticed his gut felt a little tender but didn't know why, or the gal who took ten minutes in the bathroom when she usually takes five.
Just adjust as much as you need.

Moreover, we are the only species on the planet that drinks milk from another species. That is to say, no matter what traditions people have, drinking milk is not natural.
I have been vegan since 1996 and the biggest challenge is cheese. You'll find really good replacements for everything else, but cheese is a toughie. There does some to be some new stuff called "Daiya" that tastes quite good. I believe is base ingredient is tapioca bean. Daiya Vegan Cheese, Dairy Free Cheese alternatives, cholesterol free, non dairy cheese, allergy free cheese, gluten free, healthy option
Good luck with it.

Its not really a "complete lifestyle change"!
She should experiment to see what she can and cant eat, i wouldnt just stop eating everything that contains milk!

I had thought that this was the case as well but then my son's doc tells me "you either have it or you don't... There is no varying levels of it.." when I explained that I often had similar but less severe issues with dairy-based foods.
I think then that what he's describing as "lactose intolerant" is just a convenient descriptor specifically for the folks who are very susceptible to problems.
So I wouldn't say that it's a disease or some sort of dreaded condition as we all share it to some extent but there are those who suffer from it who need to take extra care and it's those folks who get the "lactose intolerant" label.

| | | | I couldn't tolerate milk products for years and was told I had lactose intolerance. We switched to organic dairy products and I no longer have any issues. Try it!

What we found out with her is she was actually allergic to gluten which made the lactose condition worse. After learning more about gluten sensitivity we have found out that many, many people are also in the same boat and don't know it. Like one in 130 has this allergy. Since we have changed her diet a few years ago not only is she much healthier, she can now eat ice cream etc with no major issues. Tis a weird world. Gluten allergy comes with many varied symptoms from extreme fatigue and tired feeling after eating, lactose intolerance, skin cancer, low vitamin B, mood swings etc, etc. As well, few doctors know how to identify it. My wife was lucky that her Doc was also allergic and knew all the signs since a blood test does not always catch it.
Hope the best for you both, health issues are never fun, and neither are lifestyle changes.

Thanks for any help guys! | I am, to a small degree. My mother and brother have it much worse. The only dairy products I eat regularly are cheese, on occasion I'll have yogurt, or sour cream. I eat them in such small quantities that Im fine, the worst I get is some fowl gas.
