Let's be in a gang,...go to a crowded downtown event that is swarming with cops and security,...get into a fight with a rival gang,...open fire and hit 3 innocent bystanders (nice aim dip****) with dozens of witnesses and see what happens.

Spokane Police say a total of three people were injured during a shooting that disrupted Hoopfest activities Saturday evening.

The shooting happened just before 6:00 p.m. as players were clearing the courts near the Rotary Fountain at Howard and Spokane Falls Boulevard, close to the Toyota Shootout area.

Police say a fight between rival gangs in Riverfront Park ended with at least one shot being fired near the fountain.

Three people were injured in the shooting, including two women who were shot in the leg and another man who was grazed by a bullet. [Three people with one bullet huh,...this punk got lucky]

Both women were taken to a local hospital, police say their injuries are non-life threatening. The third male victim was treated at the scene by medics and later released.

Police say all three victims were not associated with any of the suspects or the original fight.

Multiple calls came into the 911 dispatch center just after the shooting. Those callers were able to give detailed descriptions of those involved in the fight.

Descriptions of the suspects were relayed to several officers already staged Downtown for Hoopfest. Police were on the scene of the shooting less than a minute after it happened.

Officers took five people into custody right after the shooting. Three of the suspects were followed by an off-duty officer who relayed their position to responding officers.

Police placed 19-year-old Migelito C. Garcia, 19-year-old Adam Doe and 21-year-old Marquis Johnson into custody.

Garcia was booked for three counts of 1st Degree Assault and one count of 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of a firearm, Doe was arrested for 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and 3rd Degree Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Johnson was arrested for a probation violation.

Tyrone Carell, 21, and Kalen Bradford, 19, were later contacted by police and taken into custody for their role in the shooting. They were arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police say they have recovered the handgun they believe was used in the shooting, but could provide no other details about the weapon.

Several Hoopfest courts are located near the fountain, but organizers say none of the games will be canceled due to the shooting.

"This is the first incident we've had in 21 years," said Rick Steltenpohl, Executive Director of Hoopfest. "It saddens us, but we're fully confident this was a rare and isolated incident."

Steltenpohl said Hoopfest's security and operations staff were prepared for an incident like this.

"The plan worked to perfection," said Steltenpohl.

Steltenpohl added that families have no reason not to feel completely safe at Hoopfest.

Spokane Police say their investigation into the shooting is ongoing. They are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, or those who have pictures or video of the shooting suspects and who were not already contacted by police, to call Crime Check at

If you aren't familiar with Hoopfest it's billed as the "World's Largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament". It's basically an excuse to shutdown all of downtown Spokane and have a bunch of out of shape white people pay to get schooled by the And 1 team. I'm kidding,...they separate the teams by skill and age but I think a bunch of streetball teams come down and compete, but they had nothing to do with the shooting.

For what it's worth I don't blame this on basketball. Spokane definitely has it's share of the drug (mainly pot and meth) trade and criminal activity (mainly property crimes) but honestly,...these "gangsters" wouldn't last 2 minutes in any real city. Maybe I just don't understand these gangs purpose around here.

Again I plead ignorance to how gangs operate (the whole incarceration education isn't lost on me though) there wouldn't be gangs here if there wasn't something to make money on (drugs) but most of these kids are just wannabes and whenever I associate Spokane with gangs,...something just seems phony about it. Not that I'd want to meet any of these guys face to face.

We have our share of poverty, homelessness, drugs and crime,...but our streets are relatively benign. I'm not naive enough to say,..."oh not here,..Spokane is too sleepy". I'm just baffled by the shear fact that there are gangs here and constantly ask myself why.
