My class earned an extra recess not that long ago because of good behavior. Yesterday I took them outside to let them have at it in the afternoon. As I walk out I look across the soccer fields to this dead-end driveway that goes along between some little league fields and the school property (and is, I believe, part of our property) and there are 12 to 13 teenagers and adults gathered around and several of them are fighting. As I'm seeing this I look over and see some school maintenance men jump into their pickups and speed across the field towards the ruckus. I immediately pulled out my phone and called the local police. As the maintenance guys got there the fight sort of broke up and they started talking to someone. Then these two girls started going at it again punching each other as I'm talking to the dispatcher. Well one carload of people gets in their car and drives off just as I hang up. The other carload wasn't so lucky...4 cop cars pull up blocking their exit.
I talked to the maintenance guys and it turns out that the mothers of two of the teenage girls were over there...they had BROUGHT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DAUGHTERS OVER TO THE EDGE OF OUR SCHOOL TO FIGHT!! Are you kidding me?! If anyone is wondering what's wrong with kids these days here is your answer - it's their parents.
Unfortunately there wasn't much that could be done because there were no direct witnesses that could say who was fighting and one of the cars got away but the police were able to cite them for trespassing or something like that.

A few of my friends are teachers and there's not one who doesn't have a screwed up story that rivals that. Our society is going to hell in a handbasket..

Some people shouldn't breed, and stupid should hurt.

I agree on the parents. Kids don't learn to act like they do on their own. They pick it up from the people they spend the most time around....their own parents.

So - to me that means you took your class out to have a fight..?
As in "Let's have at it, sir..." ...
But from the tone of you conclusion that seems unlikely!

Period. | i think thats kind of narrow-minded view, especially for a Family Therapist. I've worked with family therapy groups, and while the parents have massive impact on the mores and other values of the child, no one is set in what they will become. in many cases the irresponsible behaviour of the parents can actually motivate the kids to be better people |

There are all these programs out there designed to fix the behaviors (which are many times just symptoms) of children, when the core problem isn't addressed: The home, and more specifically, the parents. Regardless of what treatment modality is utilized, the majority of the child's life is spent in the home, with those parents.
I have worked with hundreds of families, and even more children in individual therapy. Of all of them I have worked with, less than 5% had competent, nurturing adults raising the kids.
