Some people shouldn't be messed with [especially a Gurkha w/khukuri knife]

Long story short, a lone Gurkha was traveling on a train when ~ 40 robbers started stealing wallets, watches and such. The Gurkha wasn't going to draw blood over that, but when they began to rape a woman, he went onto action, killing three and wounding eight. Awesome.

Gurkha with khukuri example:

I imagine the narrow combat zone worked to the advantage of the soldier.

Here's the wiki entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurkha

Quote:
Gurkhas are best known for their history of bravery and strength in the Indian Army's Gorkha regiments and the British Army's Brigade of Gurkhas. The Gurkhas were designated by British officials as a "Martial Race". "Martial Race" was a designation created by officials of British India to describe "races" (peoples) that were thought to be naturally warlike and aggressive in battle, and to possess qualities of courage, loyalty, self sufficiency, physical strength, resilience, orderliness, the ability to work hard for long periods of time, fighting tenacity and military strategy. The British recruited heavily from these Martial Races for service in the British Indian Army.[3]

Former Chief of staff of the Indian Army, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw once famously said about Gurkhas:
Quote:
“ If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha. ”

They have no fear, it's someone you want on your side if you can. I remember my grandfather relating a story that the Gurkha would have to draw blood with that blade if they unsheathed it, it was a requirement, if they didn't, they made an incision and used some of their own blood to satisfy this rule. I don't know if it's true, but as a kid I was awestruck.

Great story! Upset Gurkha? Don't mess about, get on your toes and run, run away and hope he doesn't catch you

I wonder if the one in the picture cut himself, or the cameraman

They may have relented/modernised on that one

The reputation for fearlessness has always been there though, something that was related by their unfortunate foe I expect. I'd be interested in finding out if that story was the case back in the day. I was told that about 30 years ago, it stuck with me.

I have also heard that about the khukri blade ALWAYS having to draw blood if unsheathed. I'm not sure how true that is but that's been part of the Gurkha legend now for a long long time.

Since they train extensively with the weapon, I imagine that rule is for battle?

I'd rather believe that the rule applies 24/7. It adds to the mystique about them in my eyes

It may have been a thing from back in the day. But even as a myth, I could certainly believe that one from the regard they were held in, interesting fellows.

Don't know if it's true, but I remember hearing a story that british troops moving through longer grasses etc would often feel a hand at their feet, the Gurkhas would be moving around on the ground and use the socks or boots to determine friend of foe.

Also have heard a few stories about them collecting ears?

Regardless, those are some of the scariest SOBs on the planet, glad they're on our side!

Argylls fight hand to hand in Iraq

Published Date: 16 May 2004
By BRIAN BRADY
WESTMINSTER EDITOR

SCOTTISH troops fixed bayonets and fought hand to hand with a Shi’ite militia in southern Iraq in one of their fiercest clashes since the war was declared more than a year ago, it was reported last night.

Soldiers from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders mounted what were described as "classic infantry assaults" on firing and mortar positions held by more than 100 fighters loyal to the outlawed cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, according to military sources.

At least 20 men from al-Sadr’s army were believed killed in more than three hours of fighting - the highest toll reported in any single incident involving British forces in the past 12 months.

Nine fighters were captured and three British soldiers injured, none seriously.

"It was very bloody and it was difficult to count all their dead," one source was quoted as saying. "There were bodies floating in the river."

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were drawn into the fighting when soldiers in two Land-Rovers were ambushed on Friday afternoon about 15 miles east of the city of Amara. The soldiers escaped, only to be ambushed a second time by a larger group of militia, armed with machine-guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars.

Reinforcements were summoned from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment at a base nearby. "There was some pretty fierce hand-to-hand fighting with bayonets fixed," the source added. "There were some classic assaults on mortar positions held by the al-Sadr forces."
20 British troops were ambused by about 100 armed insurgents. The final toll on the insurgents was about 35 killed, many wounded and some taken prisoner, only 3 Brits were injured (and nothing serious at that)!

(not trying to detract anything from the Gurkhas!)

Heard the same story from an ex-Para who served in the Falklands. Sentries were under strict instructions to make sure that their boots were laced as per regulations. A Gurkha, feeling the 'wrong' pattern of bootlaces, would assume that they were in the presence of the enemy & act accordingly - this didn't involve taking prisoners.

Apart from beeing serious badasses (the Regiment has 26 VCs to its credit), they're amongst the nicest people you could ever want to meet. I went to school with a few Gurkha kids & they were great people. The girls were very pretty too. Oh, & the cooking isn't bad either.

Very hot on honour, your Gurkha, & I cannot understand the shameful way that the M.O.D has treated them down the years. Good thing that's largely settled now - the only thing scarier than a Gurkha is Joanna Lumley on a mission

EDIT: I wouldn't muck about with the Jocks either. I once got a serious pasting off a couple of guys from the Black Watch. I'll freely admit to being young, drunken & out of order, so I probably deserved it.
