Somebody who knows something about cell phone networks.

I'm moving to verizon in a month or two and I'm deciding between the Droid X, and the Droid 2.... I'm leaning towards the X but this is what confuses me.

Droid 2 has just 3g.

Droid X has GSM 850/900/1800/1900 3G HSDPA 850/1900/2100

I know what 3G is, what I don't know is what all the other stuff is. I realize they are other networks, but how will this benefit me? I am most likely not going to be outside of the US, and when I do I'll use skype So living in America, will the other networks really benefit me? Like if there is no 3G and no edge I guess I can be on one of the other networks, where as with the other phone I won't have reception, or am I totally off?

Please help.

Where are you getting this info on the Droid X? GSMArena or something? Verizon does not use HSDPA. They use EVDO as their 3G technology. 3G is basically a generic term. It can refer to different technologies. In terms of the specs you show for the Droid X, I'm wondering if you are looking at the European version/non-US version.

To answer your question, yes the Droid X on Verizon will have EVDO/3G capability. If Verizon/Motorola tried to release a smartphone today without 3G, I would be very surprised if anyone would go for it.

I'm a big fan of Android and the Droid X looks like it will be a nice device. But it is on the larger side, so keep that in mind. It is coming out later this month. The Droid 2, I believe, is slated to release in late August. Not sure of your time frame, but if both are out, I would suggest going to a verizon store and just checking out both devices (also might want to check out the Droid Incredible; I tested one at work, and it is pretty cool). The Droid 2 will have a hardware keyboard, the Droid X will not. I think that will be the main difference in the two devices, but not sure.

Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with either of those phones, so it will probably come down to your preference of keyboard (I used to think I needed a hardware keyboard, but with some of the new, 3rd party Android keyboards, that is no longer the case).

The GSM and HSDPA frequencies are for overseas travel.

There are 2 main types of cellular service CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (ATT, Tmobile). Then there are data networks, Edge and 3g, 3g is the fastest standard except for the 4g networks which are rolling out slowly by area. Whatever network you buy the phone on will work completely. The only problem you would have would be travelling outside america or switching networks.

For example, I am on Tmobile but I have an iPhone. I get phone, text, and Edge data but ATTs 3g network is on a different frequency than Tmobile so the iPhone wont connect to it and I am limited to Edge Data speed. Or, if you travel into Europe or Asia a lot you would need a phone that runs on their frequencies.

Google the provider you want and you should be able to find the frequencies they use on any of the many forums out there about mobile phones.
