Rather unfairly, I kind of assume it was the white trash girl at the last place I used it. WHoever it was, I hope they get caught.

Thankfully, USAA (my awesome bank) noticed it and shut it down right quick. Apparently they realized I did not fly across country to blow $200 at a 7-11. I love USAA.

I spent a weekend in Chicago a few years back and used an Amex in one location. 2 weeks later I'm contacted by Amex wanting to know about suspicious charges; turns out my card is being used all over town, which was odd because it was still in my wallet. I told them where it was used and described the waiter (are waiters the only ones doing this??), but they won't talk about their investigations so they removed the extra charges and that's the last I ever heard of it.

It is nice when card companies keep an eye out for odd expenditures, otherwise consumers could be really screwed. I wonder if they do it to be nice to their users or if there are laws that compel them?

Had it happen in Atlantic City, NJ (lived in NY at the time). Used my CC to buy 1 cd at a music store. Bill came in and I saw $400 in charges! Immediately called my CC company and filed a dispute. I was ready to drive back to Atlantic City and beat someone's arse!

Skimmers can be put on anything by anyone and look like a normal card reader. It's getting somewhat common to hear about them being put on gas stations, atms, etc.

Definitely. I remember reading some article that had like 15-20 pics of them in various configurations, and some with cameras so they can watch you enter the pin number as well. Insane.

There are a few here, but I'm going to try to find the other article.

Here it is. Some real crazy setups on some of these.

Yup, happened to my Dad a few years ago. Luckily banks get suspicious when a bunch of charges get run up rather quickly, and they freeze the card, and refund the charges.

It's only unfair if it's not true. Glad USAA caught it. I have them for insurance. They are a good company.

Sure seems like it, eh? One of my friends had the same thing happen after dining at a restaurant here in town. Ends up a couple of the wait staff were in on some scam.

I saw a TV spot where wait staff will keep a small reader by the register and do a double swipe on cards, one legit on the house machine, then one on their reader and download the info onto a computer at home to duplicate the card.
