Someone please explain this obsession American women have with the British royals

Sign in to disble this ad
This is in no way meant to offend our British members, so please don’t take it that way. But I simply don’t get American’s obsession with the British royals. Yes, I know we don’t have royals here, but our founding fathers intentionally designed our government that way. So why the obsession so many women have here have with them …. Why?!?!

Up until 15 years or so ago, I was simply puzzled by it, but that was about it. But do I now have a reason for going beyond puzzled? Yep. About 15 years ago or so one of my sisters calls me early on a Sunday morning crying uncontrollably and I had a really hard time understanding what she was saying. But I could make out something like “They killed her, they chased her and they killed her. She’s dead. They killed her!!!” So I’m trying to figure out who? She barely gets out something and all I could hear is something like“Diane”, which is our other sister’s name. So I’m frantic, trying to figure out what she’s talking about, did I hear her correctly, what’s going on, etc. So she’s absolutely inconsolable and I end up crying because I think my sister is dead, and apparently tragically and violently!

After a while of trying to make sense of what she’s saying, she can’t understand why I’m talking about our sister and asks what I’m talking about. I’m confused and ask her what SHE’S talking about and she says “Princess Diana!!!”. I was stunned. I yelled at her for waking me so early on the only day of the week to sleep late, I pretty much ridiculed her and called her an idiot, and hung up on her. Fifteen years later she’s STILL mad about my reaction and that I never apologized, but I simply can’t see what *I* have to apologize for. Am I a jerk, probably, but c’mon, is there a reason I should have cared? Sure Diana's death was tragic because it shouldn’t have happened. Sure, she did good charitable works. But did my sister give a d@mn about the thousands of other good British women who do charitable work? Nope. Diana was a princess so we should ALL be interested in everything she ever did.

Should I have apologized at some point? Maybe. But I simply couldn’t do it. Then this morning I was more glad than ever that I never did apologize. Why? Because this morning everyone in my family got an email from my sister pointing us the news story about Harry’s engagement and saying how wonderful the news is.

Enough of Harry and whatever his fiancé’s name is. I’ve heard all I need to hear. Ever. I hit that point years ago. I simply don't care!

OK, rant off.

Easily explained with one word, and one you used too.

Princess.

Ditto. But I also agree with the Princess thing. Why your sister is still upset is beyond me.

Yep. It's the "Princess" thing. Almost every little girl dreams of being a princess who is wooed by a knight in shining armo(u)r it's in Disney movies, in story books, there are dolls, toys and whatnot. Some of them never grow out of the fantasy

Well, then there's the part where they grow up and **DEMAND** to be treated like a princess and waited on hand and foot, then hate you when you actually do it but love you when you treat them like dirt... go figure. But I'm way digressing at this point

I used to really be bugged by the whole royalty thing, but I'll take that any day over what passes for royalty in this country these days............Paris Hilton, Snookie, Housewives Of NJ etc.

Yep. Little girls play Snow White and Prince Charming, and little boys play Indiana Jones having an adventure. We might think American women's obsession with the British Royals is dumb, but they think our obsession with sports is just as dumb.

Believe me, it's not only you Americans who are baffled by people's obsession with our royal family. I don't understand it and never will - except for the obvious thing about it being to do with everyone's collective obsession with celebrity. Some people are famous just for being famous, and that's about all that can be said.

This might help with the Princess Diana thing, though...,

I just hate how they are official head of state. I would much rather have Canada as a republic.

and not only American women, but the American news media. Yesterday, the "Today" show -- and probably the other shows -- led with 10 minutes about the news of the engagement.

Today, the same, plus much more throughout the rest of the opening hour. How'd they meet? Why'd he wait so long to propose? How would she adjust to the royal life? How different is she from Diana? Would their marriage be better than his parents' marriage? Will the wedding be spring or summer? Blah blah blah. I fear that there is much more press overkill to come.

Like others, I'm a fan of many things Brit. But I just don't get the obsession with the royals.

For little girls, to be princess has always been there, I can understand the interest in connection.

I was more interested in the way that Diana died, being the 'liability' she got to be to certain people, the same as Dr David Kelly and his 'suicide'?

I'm glad the royals were reviewed by the government and had their expense budget cut, incredible waste.

Morrissey best sums my feeling on them,

'I'd like to drop my trousers to the Queen
Every sensible child will know what this means
The poor and the needy
Are selfish and greedy on her terms'

See how little I care? I didn't even know which one it was.

However, you did, ya Nancy boy. Stop playing with your tiara and surrender your man card immediately!

You say "obsession" simply because people you know talk about it?

How about having the queen printed or stamped on all of your money?

Obsession. Pshh.

:P
