I was home sick Thursday and rented it. Really good music documentary. Kudos to Dave Grohl. Two great quotes in that movie:
When basically all the Nirvana guys were recording with Paul McCartney, Grohl goes "why can't it always be this easy?" McCartney responds "It is". Good one, Sir Paul! ; )
Also, Trent Reznor's observation that the accessibility of everyone to record now via Pro Tools, Garage Band, etc. hasn't led to any real increase in quality music (one could argue that there is less of it than ever despite the fact that you don't need a record deal to make an album anymore). On one hand, the accessiblity for musicians now to record their music, get it up on the internet, etc. is awesome and liberating. At the same time, it destroyed the industry that was (you could argue good and bad on this one). However, their is no denying that perhaps the technology has made it so easy that it often cuts quality. When you can "fix it in Pro Tools", do you spend the time working on the craft beforehand. Back in the day, you didn't dare go in the studio without a thousand rehearsals of those songs to make sure you could do a good job (unless you were a big singed band with huge record company budgets to fund you writing in the studio). Time was $$, fixes weren't as easy, etc.
Regardless, it is a really cool movie and I think most musicians would enjoy it. I've found myself thinking a lot about that second part. |
