Speaker "grill" question

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I don't know how exactly to word this... but I will use an Ampeg 8x10 for an example.

The Ampeg 8x10 has a grille made out of cloth, (if not you know what I am talking about) and that lets the sound waves travel freely through and on to the listener(s). That is what I am referencing to in my question, that portion of any cabinet (not specifically the Ampeg 8x10).

Well, in my case I need something sturdy, see through, and solid so I'm thinking some form of glass or plexi-glass to cover my cabinet's "grill".

The difference here is I am talking about subwoofers, and not a band-pass box. I am building a sealed box, so would it matter if I had plexi-glass over the face of the sub-woofer? Or would this create an unwanted noise, suppression of noise, reduction of bass output, etc..?

Thank you :]

If it's solid it will block the sound waves from travelling, presumably creating a muffled tone.

Yeah, but sub-woofers are meant to reproduce the low frequencies that we hear more than feel... so would it really matter?

I don't know what else I would cover them with.

You don't cover sub-woofers, normally you have a hole. Or rather you can, but you have that tube whole thing. I'm not an expert.

Yeah, well I guess I'll either risk spilling stuff on my subs or do it and waste money if it doesn't work lol.

Thanks for your input, anyone else can still leave their 2 cents :]

Well, a solid cover will be rubbish, you need a mesh or something. It reads like you think because something is see through it'll let sound through as easily.

I don't really know, somewhere that sells stuff for speakers?

edit: that makes me sound really snarky. I do literally not know.
