Speech recognition software (Dragon etc.)

The last thread we had on it was in '06, so things must have improved since then, I'd hope. Are there any commercially-available, not-bizarrely-expensive speech recognition programs that work well nowadays?

I use the one that comes with Windows 7 and it's pretty good. The more I work with it the better it's getting. Only problem is if I want to use Photoshop because it won't really work with that.

My dad has Dragon and he really likes it. He writes a lot, but can't type very well so it helps him. He also lectures a lot, so he sometimes uses it to transcribe parts of his lectures off of cd. The more you use them, the better they get. They aren't perfect, but quite good if you can't type fast enough to keep up with your thought process.

I've been using it for quite a few years. The early versions were quite error-prone, but the version 10 I now have is very accurate.

I was impressed with the free Dragon dictation app for the iPhone.

It works quite well most of the time, I just wish it was easier (less clicks) to get your message to another app. Apples fault, really, not Dragon's.

As far as OS-based recognition goes, Microsoft took a huge leap forward in the last 3-4 years. The software that comes with Windows 7 is very accurate. This goes for speech, and handwriting recognition.

If you want to go beyond Windows' abilities, Dragon is probably your best choice.
