Recently got a speeding ticket that I'm not going to contest. I definitely was speeding, but that's not the issue. I call the Magistrates office to ask bout my fine, and it's 200.00 OVER what the state law says the maximim fine is. When I asked the very rude lady at the office about where the extra 200.00 came from, citing the state code, she said,"you'll have to come to court, and work it out there". I have a copy of their traffic violation fine sturcture, and a copy of the state code. They are over the maximum fine on everything. I'm thinking about going to the office with the info and trying to work something out there. Don't want to take time off work for a court date that might not produce results. Any advice?

I don't about GA, but in the great state of CA, aside from the fine, you also get to pay court costs & admin fees and other not so obvious things.
I suspect that is where the other $200 comes from.

Was just reading last month's Car and Driver and they mention the new fines the states are employing to "increase safe driving." I believe that the dollar amount you've specified is the same as the one associated with the "super speeder" additional fine on top of the normal citation.

I would strongly reccomend going though if you are at all able. I've heard so many stories from friends geting out of fines for this-that-or-the-other reasons.
State/County economies are hurting right now and i've seen a HUGE increase in speed traps and minor traffic pull-overs in the last year alone as well as a HUGE spike in speeding and red-light cameras.
Good luck man.

edg | ^ This. It's probably fees on top of the fine itself.

I was on a split 4 lane state road. When I asked about the extra 200 dollars over the State limit, she made no mention of fees or other costs. She was just very rude and told me to show up on court day and work it out then.I cant imagine 200.00 in extra costs for a speeding ticket. It doesn't take that long to enter that data into the computer. I'm going to the Magistrates office Friday with all my info and see if I cant get it down to a resonable level.

Anyhow, good luck with getting that fine reduced. It's not inconceivable that they intentionally 'accidentally' included an additional and inappropriate fine/fee in the hops that you wouldn't know any better or be too lazy to fight it.
