Sign in to disble this ad
So I am honeymooning in Maui here

We will be there for a week in mid April. What are the cool things to do? It is both of our first times in Hawaii so we would not be against "touristy" things but want to know some hip local joints too.

Are there any TBer's gigging in Maui? We would love to catch a show!!!

Im going to maui in a few months, for the same reasons. Only my fiancee has been a few times, and all I really want to do is get loaded and get laid.

Try to catch TB'ers Jerry and Marcus Johnson, both of whom gig a lot there and are really cool dudes. The Sunday jazz session at Canoes in Lahaina is kind of cool too.

If you can, be sure to check out the North Shore and upcountry areas. I always stay on that side (I windsurf) and didn't really start doing the tourist side much until my third or fourth trip. There's killer snorkeling right in front of some of the hotels on the south side, the rental places will hook you up with a map. Right in front of your hotel is pretty good, but try some other beaches too, or maybe a boat trip/snorkel deal.

PM me and I'll throw out a few locals' recommendations I've collected, I don't want to post 'em and point even more haoles at those places.

Have fun, and use lots of sunscreen whether you think you need to or not!

There are mokes and Samoans in Hawaii that I guarantee are bigger than you. A lot of those guys dominate on their home breaks. I was surfing on the big island at a place called Hana's. It's in the town of Kona. It's a dredge right barrel with a very fast hollow section. There was a guy that must have weighed about 350. Maybe more. He was as fat as a walrus. This dude was dropping in on an 11 foot pig that could have easily have been a stand up paddle board. Also it was a twin fin. You probably don't know the difference here, but a twin fin is a squirrelly highly maneuverable configuration that is common on very very short boards. Not optimal for a 350 pound dude. Most guys were riding mini guns or more down the line speedier thrusters (three fins). I personally watched this huge dude get shacked in barrels the size of small buildings.

This was the same dude that worked me back into the line up after I personally knocked my own dick in the dirt. When I drove up to the wave, I saw that it was firing. This was the third time I have been to the big island. This spot was pretty fickle. I have only ridden it twice before. When i saw it firing I got back to my room as fast as I could, screwed in the fins on my board and paddled out. I noticed that most of the lineup was sitting inside of this giant dude. I gotta admit he was pretty intimidating. Long black hair across a huge back with tats that looked like giant leathery pancakes. I couldn't figure out why no one wasn't sitting deeper on the point. So I paddled right through the pack and sat on the peak.

Now let me preface this next part with a little disclaimer. I've been surfing a long time. Since I was nine years old. I've traveled all over the world surfing. I'm no pro, but I can hold my own in most places. Not to mention I work boats, waverunners, rescue equipment all in the surf. I am usually very calm about approaching a new break. I sit and I watch it. I watch the locals. Where do they take off? How far down the line do they go? Do they kick out, or do they ride it all the way to the channel? How frequent are the rides? How frequent are the sets? What kind of waves are coming through between the sets? I study before I paddle out. But this one time, I felt that since I had ridden this wave before, I knew what I was doing. So I paddled right through the pack, past all the local rippers, past all spongers, and past this giant moke sitting point. I felt like I knew what I was doing.

My first wave came to me. It fat voluptuous beauty with what was looking to be a hollow take off and a long workable shoulder with sections to carve up like a long sexy extended leg going right through the crowd that was now all paddling out to adjust for the set. So I turned around, paddled into a good position and took off. It must have been about a 12 foot face with a fast drop right over dry reef. Instantly, I realized I was going to eat major mounds of poo. I quickly sacrificed my board for the cause by riding the wet exposed reef like a skateboard, ripping my fins out in the process and I flop over sideways into a little hole that about 6 feet deep. The wave washes over me and worked my way back out of the hole into a rip that dumped into the crowd. My leash was dangling ineffectively around my ankle while I swam freestyle right through the entire crowd. That giant moke was leading a slow golf clap for me while I swam to the channel. The channel is a rip current that is naturally formed by a gap in the reef. This reef was like a river going out to sea. But I was only about 25 yards away from shore. So I put my head down and swam in. The rip was moving so fast that it took me like 10 minutes to make it to shore. As a swimmer I used to do 50 yards in 22 seconds. That's twice as far as I had to go and it still took me that long with my head down and hustling.

When I finally made it to shore people were laughing at me. I went straight to my bag, grabbed my keys. I found half of board. Threw it away, and then drove back to my room to grab another board. I screwed the fins back, checked some of my wounds. I was bleeding, but not bleeding to death. I went right back to the beach paddled into the line up and sat quietly in the crowd. Dudes were ripping on me. Laughing at me. Pointing at me. I was the total haolie. JOJ (Just of Jet). Full-on mainland kook. Well, I watched a few sets roll through and the locals were destroying them. That big moke was getting slotted and carving huge turns on what looked liked an giant airplane wing. As he was paddling back he looked at me and said

'Hey bruddah. You ready to ride now or what? I saw what happened dude, and I gotta admit that it was some of the funniest **** I've ever seen, but you gotta either paddle into one of these babies or I'm going to pound your ass all the way to da sand.'

So when the set came through, he turned to me and said "You go."

The wave was great. It was a high speed screamer with lots of technical power turns all the way to the channel. Got a few shocka's from some of the other guys and he worked me into the line up. That dude didn't have to do that. It was full on aloha. He was easily 350. So don't give me that,' I'm too fat to surf' crap.

Nice Daren. I got dissed by soccer moms the first time I tried windsurfing real waves at Kanaha. I was clueless and headed straight to the infamous Kanaha Triangle, aka The Weird Wave. Nothing like hitting a big sweet floating jump and landing on...dry reef. Ruh-roh, here comes a head high set! And of course, it's rental gear and you pay if you break it. But windsurfers are a whole different crew, and there's only really one break that's all that territorial, Hookipa. It's a great big ocean, just you and the sea turtles and the Landlord once you get a few hundred yards out.

The only real attitude I got was from a 9 year old, when I got exhausted from sailing upwind a couple of miles and inadvertantly came in at the locals' fishing area between the breaks: "haole, you go back where you came from." I laughed and told him: "I'm tryin' to get back to Kook's Beach, brah." His "uncles" laughed too then and that was that. I love Maui.

^^hahaha. That's funny. Can totally imagine that.

I had no problems in Maui. I surfed everywhere I wanted to, including a remote area off Hana hwy.

I just spent half an hour reading about weird wave. That looks totally unappealing to a regular surfer.

My rock band will be playing in Kihei tonight at the Sports Page and my Santana/Allman Bros/ jam band will be playing in Wailuku next Friday at the Main Street Bistro during the monthly First Friday Street Festival.

Hope you enjoy your visit with our little island!

Ooops, didn't notice the 'mid-April' part.

What Steve said.

I will suggest that you leave Ka'anapali and head north on the Hano'opi'ilani highway and travel around the West Maui mountains. It's very similar to the road to Hana, but not nearly as long so it won't take all day. Stop and get out of the car, walk a little bit for the views, stop at the World's Best Banana Bread stand, turn around if you miss it, hike a little down the path to the waterfalls if you see it.
