I think you should be prepared to be flamed.

With that said, check my profile and look how much gear I've bought myself

2 years later I am still saving up for a cab for my Peavey Head that I bought here. The only thing bought for me was my 1st bass. A Squier affinity series P-bass. The one that came with the pack, included a 15watt rumble.

Meh. I try not to worry so much about other people's junk/stuff. Most bring enough personality issues that what they own can't possibly be as annoying.

I think you should rock out with what you have and take solace in knowing that you are probably more appreciative of what you've got then the "spoiled kids" are. There are always going to be ungrateful little snots in anything that has an amateur/hobbiest avenue in it, and they're the ones who understand the least about their craft. Some of these kids may actually be very grateful to their parents and work their butts off practicing and playing to show they've earned it.

Some people just have more money, and it's just not a big deal for them to spend that on their kids' fleeting interests, or whatever. Personally, I worked hard for everything I owned when I was a teen (not that long ago), and I had much more stuff than you do (according to your profile), and stuff that was more expensive (not saying better, just that I paid lots for it). But again, I worked for it. Unless some of these kids are outright whining about their parents, don't assume they're just having everything handed to them, or that it's not some sort of trade system (i.e. child does x, y, z, and parent buys them a new amp or whatever).

By and large, I find most of the younger population on TB (younger as in 18 and under) to be respectful and appreciative of their parents' contributions and support. The whining brats tend to be more of the exception than the rule. That's IME, however. I don't tend to pursue threads which fall out of my areas of interest, and that's probably where much of that might occur.

Everything I have I bought and paid for. My mother bought me a 5 speed bike when I was in 6th grade so I could deliver news papers and contribute financially to the family. And I do get angry when I hear a 14-15 year old kid asking for advice on how to con his folks out of a boutique bass.

That said, I'd rather these kids spend money on music than on many other things out there. If a thousand are interested enough to care for expensive instruments and amps, maybe we'll get 10 that will give us aural pleasure someday, and the rest can keep the bars interesting. Rock on young bloods.

I've spent about 3 grand total on music gear, I'm 17. I personally paid for every penny of it.

I can think of a lot worse things that mom and dad could get their kids. Music gear purchases seem like a positive thing to me.

Its not always purchased by their parents. If a kid gets a decent job, he can save up enough money to buy the good stuff. Remember, 16 year olds typically don't have any bills. It's all pure disposable income.

Since you're from Alta Loma (I went to Ontario High when it was a new school) do you know any of the Urenas? A cousin of mine used to own a music store down there. Musical family.

im 17 and i see so many teenagers spoilt rotten, its horrible, not just on here, but people i know from school and things too.

i just think of how it must effect them, anything they want their parents buy for them.

i personally save up and buy nearly everything i own.. thats why my bass is worth a grand total of... $200 *gasp* Australian dollars too :P

although im looking at getting something better at the moment.

.. maybe i can convince my dad....

I'm 16. I've been playing for two years. I have a little over a $1,000 worth of equipment. Altogether it would be my bass, amp, pre/amp with dist., wah, and processor. I payed for the amp, wah and processor. When I first started playing bass i was at Height Ashbury st. in California, just looking through a local guitar shop. And I seen this T-Bird on a stand and I begged my mom to get it for me. And I told her I'll give her $100 right now out of my pocket if she would pay the other 200 for my birthday. I just had to promise that I wasn't going to get this and then decide in a month that I don't want it. So I payed for some of my bass and my mom payed for the other. Then I started working and buying everything else but I asked my parents for a pedal for Christmas last year and they got it. I wouldn't say i'm spoiled but my parents are supportive for the most part of me being a musician. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate every dollar of it cuz i know how much money that it and what it takes to buy it.

No, you;re not spoiled. There is nothing wrong with your parents getting you a gift or being supportive, also the fact that you have managed to acquire a large part of your rig through your saving up etc...says a lot. Glad you didn't loose interest after a month

i'm 35 and have been playing bass since the 4th grade, before that was piano. my parents never bought me a single instrument / piece of equipment except some pops rosin until i was old enough to have a paper route to pay for the things i wanted. at that time i sat first chair every year in the virginia symphony youth orchestra, regionals, and all state. all using what was available to me for free through the public school system. while i think it's great that kids are being afforded the opportunity to have some really great gear, every once in a while i see where it has gone to some of their heads. even on here.

I view just as some people honestly just have more money then others, and with parents spending money on music for their kids is certainly is more positive then some other things out there. Some kids don't really care and just have it, like some grown ups out there and some use it and play their hearts out, everyone is different.

When a poster does come off as spoiled, if anything I feel sorry for them. IME spoiled people are usually very poorly equipped to function out in the world. So IMO spoiling a person at any age is one of the very worst things you can do to him/her.

But as far as I'm concerned, how other TBers manage to afford their gear is really none of my business - I just don't dwell on that at all.

Yep, this sounds like me .

EDIT: Just reread the OP and realized I'm in the clear since I've worked and paid for my gear . Even still, I constantly feel guilty because I don't exactly feel that I deserve it as a bass player even if I can pay for it . The feeling has gotten worse since I haven't been playing out at all due to most of my old bands members either being busy this summer or going away to college. Most of my spending money goes towards clothes, shoes, food, and bass gear because I really don't have anything else to spend it on.

Anyone else feel he same?
