Sprained my Achilles Tendon

Sign in to disble this ad
My Achilles Tendon is KILLING me.

During my lifeguard training, I misjudged how deep the water actually was, didn't bend my knees enough, hit the floor of the pool and three days later, it kills to walk. I limp everywhere, can't take many stairs.

I work at a waterpark, and I'm CONSTANTLY taking stairs.

Anyway, went to the doctors, they gave me some anti-inflammatory pills which have been doing great.

Any other suggestions to take care of this?

Is the Achilles heel metaphor to blatantly obvious here?

Stay with the water park and you will die.
Or maybe just limp a lot. It's up to you.

Take ibuprofen and keep your foot elevated, only walking on it when you have to. Sucks that it had to happen but if you don't take care of it you'll cause yourself problems later on with the same ankle. My ankles are shot because of skateboarding, basketball, and the Marines. They're chronically sprained and always hurt. Too bad no one told me anything when I was younger.

I would at the risk of sounding clichéd, "look before you leap"
As for the tendon just try to avoid moving it where possible.

Be careful with those anti inflamatories. They do a brilliant job of masking the pain, and believe it or not that's the problem. You "feel" fine so you go about your normal life, but the injury itself may not have healed. They lure you into a false sense of well-being and more often than not, people make their injuries worse (or at the very lease re-injure themselves) if their anti-inflanatories are too good.

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't take them. Make sure you give the injury an opportunity to heal.

Reminds me,my father toer his Achilles tendon last year during a football match.

He falls to on the ground and a friend asks:"Did that snap sound come from your leg?"

Take care Mark.

Haha

Well, the weird thing is is that it was completely fine until Friday morning.

I don't know WHY it took 3 days for it to kick in, but it was KILLING me.

TAKE IT EASY on that Achilles. I injured mine, did not rest it sufficiently and then fought tendonitis in that heel for 11 years (and counting). Don't let the medications encourage you to work that tendon if the doctor wants you to stay off it.

The Achilles is a tendon with limited blood supply, and it heals very slowly. You need to have a serious talk with your doctor about how to avoid problems in the future as a result of this injury. It helps that you're young, so your prospects for good healing are better than for old farts like moi.

Take pain killers and such for it. Anti-Inflamitories can slow the healing process, inflamation is part of the healing process. But, it's a great way to cover the pain.

As said, just take it easy. I snapped mine a few years ago, not fun, never regained the full movement. Pops and clicks a lot these days

Take care Mark.
That's what mine was like too, you hear and feel a *SNAP* at the same time. Tried to stand up on it, floppy foot syndrome, fall over. (and it was about the worst possible time, my dad had collapsed outside, so crawled to a phone to get an ambulance for him and headed out).

Good luck with the healing process, it can take a while!

Not really, but it's great for whining and moaning and feeling sorry for yourself!

You could always get a walking boot with a lift in it to focus more of you weight on the forefoot, which will take strain off of your achilles. That is... if you want to walk around in a big ol boot when it's nice and sunny out. It would help though.
