So. Today was apparently Squirrel Mosh Pit Day in my neighborhood. I've had the great pleasure of witnessing this event 2 times before, but his day my oldest daughter was able to get front row seats with me.
Squirrel Mosh Pit Day is the event where what appears to be all of the local squirrels gather in a 4 yard quadrant (mine being one of them) and just throw down for about an hour or two. There's no teams. There's no tagging in or out. There's no alliances. They just whip ass.
Today there were 2 distict fight clubs that eventually merged into one big one, and those little bastards went all out. Squirrels were everywhere. Fighting in the trees, rooftops, and on parked cars. They even stopped traffic at one point because they wouldn't leave the street when a car came. They'd rather take a radial to the head than back down.
I made multiple attempts to capture this on film. Unfortunately, trying to film or photograph a herd of bushy-tailed rats as they attempt to maim eachother is harder than I thought. My ring side seat was vacated when the battle royale and the twelve squirrels still participating rumbled up a tree, over a roof and into a neighbors backyard I didn't have access to.

Some bluejays have taken up residence in my back yard (2 little ones and what I assume to be their parents). We have squirrels wandering through there all the time, but today was a bit different. They got a bit too close to the bluejays and all hell broke loose. It was like they set up a little wrestling arena in the yard. The bluejays were so effective that one of the squirrels tried to crash through the screen door into the house. It failed miserably.
And up at the university there is usually a good battle of squirrel vs magpie going on every couple of days.

Despite claims that squirrels lack any sort of functional intelligence, most people don't realize that squirrels show a remarkable gift for imitating behavior that they observe regularly. You need to shutter the windows of your baby fighting dojo and this will cease to occur. I know its in a remote area, but really you shouldn't allow any viewing access to your training center anyway. Trade secrets and all that.

Trade secrets and all that. | Quite the contrary, my friend. My fighters are learning from the displays of violence outside of their training facility. I'll be instituting "riot style" in the near future where it's every baby for themselves. I figure that if they can survive in a hostile, no-holds-barred, fight-everyone-to-survive situation, then the standard ring and one on one baby fight will be like fighting a newborn. Quote:

The problem is predictability. I've been living in tha house for 6 years and only witnessed this spectacle 3 times. Knowing when to tag the vermin will be key to the betting.

2 - The take down.

1 - The stare down.
2 - The take down. | Um, I believe the correct captions for those images are:
1 - Do a little dance
2 - Make a little love
3 (scene missing) - Get down tonight. |
