Standard protocol for selling a bass on TB

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was thinking about how I chuckle whenever I look through the TB classifieds - figured I'd point out what I see at the common traits of an average TB classified bass ad:

1.) Seller posts ad somewhat overpriced (which will foreshadow future 'price drops')
2.) Fellow tb'er comments shortly thereafter reinforcing the idea that OP is a "good guy" and sometimes that fellow tb'er played the bass, and it is "awesome" and "well worth it".
3.) 15 ensuing comments about how "cool it looks!" and how "if only my wife would allow me to buy another one. "
4.) A couple bumps and a price-drop
5.) A question or two bass-specific, the initial one usually about the weight
6.) Someone says "I've got one like this bass: I just don't understand how this one is still up at this price!"
7.) Another price drop
8.) Sometimes an international buyer pokes in at this point and asks if the OP would ship to somewhere far far away, not uncommon for it to be Uzbeki-beki-beki-stan.
9.) Dead silence for a few days besides "bump", "bump", "bump"
10.) OP comments he/she has been playing it alot and now is "on the fence" or "debating" whether to actually sell it.
11.) At this point either the thread dies, the person sells it, or they "come to my senses" and keep it, only to relist it a month or two later.

Incredibly astute! Very true and sadly funny at the same time.

# 2.5 , #6.5 Several posts about "Hey that used to be my bass. Wish I never sold it!" All from different people within the last year. Bass has been on the road more than it's owners.

Ha, ha. I didn't want to say it, but yea, it's almost scripted. No doubt TB also has a bass trade sub-community or sub-culture. Obviously some of these folks step up to the plate for each other and it's a reciprocal thing.

Some of it may be a bit of salesmanship, but I think its usually pretty easy to read between the lines too. Overall, I think a bad deal going down is probably a rare thing, but certainly everyone needs to get the best deal possible whether they are the buyer or the seller.

Excellent! You missed however, PM sent. And PMs replied, to the top.

I've got a lot of classified peeves. The biggest is without a doubt when there are 8 paragraphs of history and explanation, with the price hidden somewhere within it all. There are times on my cellphone where I just completely gave up.

The other is when people get basses on a MF blowout and then try to sell it for $200 more a year or 2 later. Seen a few of those recently, but hey, go for it. Just don't make it sound like a bargain.

And while this isn't actually a peeve, I don't really understand the "PM sent" thing. Why bump a thread on something you're interested in buying? They'll get the PM, it doesn't need to be announced.

Sold pending payment.

Back up for sale as buyer backed out.

Great accurate observation.

It may be part of the reciprocal nature of that board - people helping each other out to create more intrigue and hype surrounding the item in question. Whenever I see a thread with the initial anouncement followed by:
"Week 1 bump"
"Week 2 bump"
"Week 3 bump"
"Is anybody out there? Bump"

If figure this must be a new guy.

This is absolutely the best playing and sounding (insert specific model) I've ever put my hands on. It kills me to sell it. Need cash but the right trade may turn my head.

Does it come with a gigbag or case when there's no mention of them being included in the ad.
