No

this movie is about how the original crew got started....so it will probably help to not have a pre-conceived idea of the characters....or how they should act and or look

long time hardcore trekkies might have difficulty with it though...i would imagine

I was never much a fan of the original series, but i really got into Next Gen in the day

Just don't pronounce it Star Trak. It's Star TREK people. Friggin' savages.

Fun flick and while a knowledge of Trek lore can help with some of the inside jokes it's not required to enjoy the movie.

I'm seeing it tomorrow, I'm really psyched, apparently they change everything in the first 10 minutes. And there's a rumor that J.J. Abrams is gonna start another Star Trek tv show.

I'm pumped about this one. I'm going to probably see it tomorrow night in IMAX.

Um, he did that back in 1982 (actually Stardate 8130). In other recent news, President Lincoln's been assassinated.

Saw it last night. Awesome. Amazing looking film (beautiful camera work), great story, and I was not bothered in the slightest that these characters we know and love were being played by other people. Karl Urban absolutely nails McCoy, and, although he neither looks nor sounds like him, Chris Pine has that Kirk swagger down to a tee, and is perfect in the role. Sulu's cool, Scotty's hilarious (thank you Simon Pegg) and Chekhov... well, has a funny accent.

I know JJ Abrams said it wasn't a reboot, but the events of the film definitely put the Trek universe on a different timeline - there are some significant events that reshape the Trek universe we know. There's also a very unlikely romance, every cheesy catchphrase (including "fascinating...", "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a... ", "Beam me up, Scotty", etc) and a whole load of humour - the film is actually really funny!

Great stuff - for old and new fans alike.

Oh, one more observation... (not really a spoiler, since everyone knows he's in it) Leonard Nimoy was a very welcome presence as Old Spock (or "Spock Prime", as he's called in the credits), but he appears to have a new set of false teeth or veneers, and it looks like they're always threatening to fall out of his mouth...

Glad to hear you liked it, Nino. I was expecting it to flop, despite the fact that Karl Urban and Simon Pegg are in it.
