... couldn't make it all the way through.
I suppose it is a fair story line, and for it's time it's visually impressive, though I watched a digital remake or whatever, still in it's core a visually impressive film (for 77).
But they're on the dark star, they've got princess leia (not sure how it's spelled... don't care frankly) and I couldn't be less interested in.
I could see it appealing to some, but the religiously devoted fans (both young and old) make even less sense to me now. I'll probably tough it out and watch the last half hour, but it's going to be rough.
I don't get the hype.

25. When I was 17 or so, I attempted to watch it, but didn't make it 20 minutes in and turned it off. I've been watching a lot of movies since I started working 3rds (what else is there to do on a night off 3rd shift on a Monday or Tuesday, yeah, what a great time to have a weekend), I wanted to watch this since it's such a cultural landmark.
OOOOOPS, I meant DEATH star. Now I'm really going to get lynched, I just really want some Darkstar pickups, and that must have eeked out of my subconscious.
Sorry for the SW bashing thread, by posting something of this nature it's as if millions of nerds suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

yeah, the first star wars is pretty slow paced and follows the classic sun-story archetype, so i can understand people not liking it.
you might like empire much better... or not. |

I'm still not convinced that he had 12 movies in mind when he first made Star Wars. He made a great film, then an even better one and finally had a pretty good finish... then Lucas went insane.
Rant aside, the problem is that you're jaded.

But I also thought that Episodes I - III were very underrated |

But, episodes I, II & III did see rather lame in comparison.
nostalgia ftw!

I had no desire to see it. I'm not big on Sci Fi stuff, it always seemed "nerdy" to me... I was too busy playing nintendo.

Then there was the genius of the marketing. For kids of that era (I went to see the film when it came out and I was four years old), Star Wars wasn't just about the film. The most important thing was the action figures. We couldn't watch the film on demand, we had to wait until Christmas when they were put on TV... VCRs did exist, but hardly anyone had them (in my circle of friends at least)... and seeing it was a big occasion.
People are nostalgic for that... and the powers that be are happy to feed that nostalgia by coming out with new product.
I am a big fan of the series and freely admit that the films are dated. I actually like the prequels as much as the orignal trilogy, but I think the marketing is completely out of hand now. |

What really doesn't make sense to me is how epically lame the lightsaber duel between Darth Vader and Obi-wan is in episode IV when viewed after the fight scenes in episode III.

That being said, I've got all 9 movies (the original three, the "digitally crapped on" original trilogy, and ep. I-III) and still would rather dust off the VCR to watch the originals.
Flashy visuals don't make up for the lackluster acting - there's a sort of campiness to the original trilogy that is appealing, and totally lacking in the new trilogy. I think the problem is that they didn't take themselves nearly as seriously in the 70's. |

I love the new ones too but there's no scene like "I find your lack of faith disturbing" or "you have failed me for the last time admiral" in the new ones.

As a kid I remember it not being my favorite episode, but as I got older I better understood the whole darkness of it. Its hands down the most emotional and well written Star Wars film, IMO.
Just to hear the quote:
Luke: I won't fail you. I'm not afraid.
Yoda: You will be. You will be.
Sends chills down my spine. Yoda sounds downright evil when he says it.

To each his own, Brother. Go watch Dark Knight instead, maybe that'll tickle yer pickle a little better.
