Unfortunately we're conditioned to not retaliate with violence when we get bullied that no one knows what to do. Trying to talk to a bully to et him/her to understand that what s/he is doing hurts the other person's feelings is like telling some one that what they're doing is working.
You're trying to deal with a base action (bullying) with an enlightened one (i.e. anything but putting them square in their place).
