I know this is a longshot, but I'm posting it anyway. Hope this is okay here.
My friend, a drummer and producer, had his backpack and laptop stolen from a restaurant in the Mission district in San Francisco. Thanks to some program, he now has an image of them...
Anybody know them? He just wants it back.

A few years back, a guy in Oakland posted a blog with images of the guy who had it, after the police did virtually nothing. It wasn't until it was tweeted so many times that Good Morning America called Oakland police, and they finally did something about it.
Here is that website: This Guy Has My MacBook |

According to the website he should be able to localise his computer via GPS or Wifi! |

Good luck to him, though! From a fellow Mac user.

It's a good idea though.

| | | | If he knows the MAC address, it can be traced to the location. That, unfortunately, means someone (police) needs to look for it. Google search topics like 'locate computer'. Is it part of a VPN? |

| | | | A Craig's List ad with the photo wouldn't be a bad idea- something like "THESE A#$HOLES HAVE MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' might work. |

But a helpful tip via PM wouldn't be out of the question.

My phone has a similar program. If it gets jacked, and someone tries to guess the password and gets it wrong, it automatically takes a pic using the front-facing camera, and sends the picture as well as their whereabouts (GPS) to my e-mail address without their knowing.
I tried it at my house and a few others, and it actually got the specific address accurate most times. When wrong, it was only off by a few houses.
Part of me actually *wants* my phone to get stolen! Hehe
