listeria ! it kills! and it incubates in us for four weeks then it really attacks us. Not like salmonella that gets you fast and most often goes away after a day or so.

Why couldn't they make it happen to a fruit I don't like, like soapberries.

Honeydew is better anyway. It also doesn't cause ED.

Although they report the infected cantaloupe is from a western state, I've no interest in locally grown cantaloupe whether Jersey or Penna. grown. I haven't heard how listeria got into the infected cantaloupe either. Was it deliberate?

Most types of melon have quite a lot of bacteria growing on the external surface.

Just make sure to give them a wash before cutting in !

Something about the skin of cantaloupe makes it easier for bacteria to seep into the good stuff and kill you.

My girlfriend and I are very much in love, but her father is opposed to our getting married.

We would slip away in the middle of the night without her father's blessing, but I don't have a ladder that will reach her window.

In other words, we cantaloupe.

Mike

I Looooove cantaloupe! I can't stope eating it - even if it kills me. It'd be a fine death! ;-)

As with anything, a rational head, a little research and a little common sense prevails:

Death Toll From Listeria in Cantaloupe Rises to 21 – TIME Healthland

The source has been identified, the tainted fruit is probably rotted from the food supply and only the elderly and infirm are at risk from listeria.

You cantaloupe? Bummer, but it may be for the best. Dolly Mae's father might shoot from a tree if you did.

Yes it does, and I have no intention of dropping one of my favorite fruits!

Uh, NO.

NONONONONO!

Just have enough intelligence to WASH your food before preparing it and don't contaminate the preparation area.

Most of the food-borne diseases in the US are caused by people being careless about contaminating their food prep area and the utensils they use.

If the people preparing cantaloupe had followed recommended procedures in washing the melons and preventing cross-contamination, this would have been prevented.

I used to have a roommate who occasionally ate raw hamburger - the MOST bacterially infused meat I know of. good guy, stupid move.

Chicken is an issue because of salmonella - but cooking at correct temperatures renders this issue moot, because all the bacteria are killed by cooking correctly. Don't cross-contaminate from the utensils and food prep area and you're fine.

I could go on, but those are the facts. Do your job in food prep with ALL your foods, and you have nothing to worry about.

And I'm four hours from Rocky Ford...with fresh cantaloupe on the menu for tonight.
