String tenor Ukelele like bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a tenor Uke and some light D'addarios .10s. Can I put the low or high four and tune it EADG? My guitarist said it will warp the neck because the tension will be too high and ukes dont have truss rods. But will it work? And which strings out of the 6 do I use?

Trade it for a baritone uke. You might get away with it with very light strings but why chance it.

Whichever ones are made of nylon.

Metal ones flat out won't work at all?

i think i'm right in saying that there's a chance metal strings would snap a uke in half.

Now I'm not talking bass strings, I'm talking about weak little guitar strings. Maybe the top 4. Those top three strings are THIN.

Just put a grenade inside the uke & pull the pin. At least it will die quickly.

I've played one, they sound pretty good...and have similar strings to the Ashbory bass.

Yeah, there are cheap baritones out there, Johnson, Mahalo, Kala.

Learn how to play it in it's proper tuning. Many of the chords are with one finger.

My goal is not to get an uke the same octave as a bass, but the same tuning, maybe an octave or 2 higher, so I can transfer my amazing skills seamlessly, and be able to play with another bass or a guitar and not have to figure out where I'm supposed to be on the fretboard.

And Maki, I'm a lazy person, and if I had more time to burn playing the uke then maybe I'd learn it but I'm still learning bass, just want another instrument I can use.

That is your problem right there. You think that the uke is competing with the bass. It's a different thing, but the things you learn still apply within the context of the bass. No knowledge is wasted in music. It might be some of the strumming styles and patterns, or perhaps the progressions, or something entirely different. Who know? That's the fun of it.

Haha, it worked, the neck is perfectly straight, I used the middle 4 from a set of .010s. Sounds good and the intonation is ok. Has a bit too much tension but the top 4 had the intonation way off.

still not sure why you dont just get nylon strings. much more appropriate to the uke (even if you bass tune it)

If I had some classical guitar strings on hand I would have used those... but I don't, maybe I'll get some before the neck asplodes.
