Stroller theft.

"...With the cost of some strollers being as much as a high-end bicycle — some popular brands cost more than $1,000 — it didn’t take long for thieves to catch on to this new crime of opportunity, Toronto police say..."

Any more local examples?..

My first question is: Who the heck pays $1000 for a stroller in the first place?

There's off-road strollers. I'm guessing the added cost is not because there's a transfer case.

the prices on all the baby gear are insane. I live near a huge baby gear store and they have strollers ranging from $70 to $1700. The jogging strollers can be expensive, but its the "Euro Designed" regular walking strollers with all sorts of odd features that go for the big bucks. Im not surprised that they get stolen, we keep ours inside the house or out of sight in the car, and we didnt even buy expensive strollers.

Not sure about production models, but I met a guy who had triplets. He had two custom made strollers for absolutely ridiculous money.

You have just put this amazing image into my head of a giant baby in a massive stroller that is a sort of Monster Truck/Stroller hybrid, and its crushing buildings and getting into a fight with godzilla or something..

The girlfriend spent several years working sales at a baby furniture retailer. The costs of some of the items was obscene. Apparently, the ability to play on the guilt of parents/grandparents is extremely effective.

Where I used to live, I was amazed at people leaving expensive strollers outside & unlocked on their porch at night. It's like leaving a bike unlocked outside, except the getaway would be slower!

Some of those big ones aren't too much, but if you see the name Mountain Buggy, Bugaboo, or Stokke you can bet that someone spent a pretty penny.

Both double wide stollers and running strollers are very handy for some parents (ie, parents who want to stay in shape but stay with their kid, or have two kids very close in age), but you don't have to go nuts with the purchase.

When i read the title i had a visual image of a thief laying a kid gently down on the sidewalk before running off with the stroller.

Can you imagine getting caught, having to admit to your cellmate:

Cellmate: "So what are you in for, punk? I held up a bank and shot three people".
You: "Oh, what...who...ME?!? Uh...um...uh...(sigh)....Grand Theft Stroller".
Cellmate:
