it was misquoted anyway.

Read this advice on TB a while ago so if it belongs to anyone please claim it. I may be paraphrasing. whatever tattoo you want, print it out on a piece of paper and hang it on your bedroom wall. look at it every time you walk in the room. look at it before you go to sleep at night and first thing when you wake up in the morning. If you still like it after 6 months go ahead and get it.

My point was to point out the hypocrisy and inconsistency by having people examine their own conscience (and thus, avoid the need for mod intervention). Many otherwise good-hearted people get downright Westboro Baptist-like, when it comes to the condemnation of LGBTs, yet eat shellfish, and have body art. So, just what parts of Leviticus should be taken seriously, or is the whole book not worthy of consideration? I am thus pointing out the hypocrisy of selective interpretation, at the very least. Non-literalists and free-thinkers will realize that I point out something even larger than that, but I have really tried to limit the scope, and potential for offensiveness, by maintaining a high degree of ambiguity, in my posts. It is probably best to leave the subject alone, upon reading this.
FACT: it's against the rules to discuss religion.

I rest my case.

Who said that I was discussing religion? That's a matter of one's own personal conscience. I merely pointed out that the prevalent Western belief systems have Scriptural admonishments against body art, and encouraged those considering a tattoo to examine their own consciences. In reality, it is a way to ask one's self if they are merely talking the talk, or walking it. That is a question for anyone, regardless of their deity, or lack of one.

If we were to take the rule against religious discussion seriously, then any and all P&W -related threads would have to be gone over, and possibly deleted. While global society, as a whole, slowly moves into post-religious existence, growing more secular daily, there is no denying the influences of mankind's religious past, including which traditions employ/allow for/use tattoos, and which do not. Such things may hold greater importance for some, and it is thus an intellectual responsibility to foster that facet of inner debate, when a thread says that such a debate exists.

Whether one gets body art or not is immaterial to me, unless they are my life partner, and there is already a stated opinion, in another thread, that laments 95% of women's tattoos.

If you say so (and you are the one to first specify the R word, in this thread)...but am I overtly bashing it, or claiming the superiority of one ideology?

Don't answer that; I employ the lawyer's trick of knowing the answer, before I question. To answer "yes" to the above might be an indicator of ignorance.

Therein lies the real intent behind the prohibition of religious discussion, and why P&W threads thrive, here. Let's face it; if there were some atheist purists whining loudly enough, P&W threads would not be allowed. As long as it is not dogma debate, we should be fine. That said, I think that I shall retire from this thread, having made the point that I set out to make. The real debate, much like the OP, is within the mind of the reader, and nowhere else.

BTW, the advice of hanging the would-be tatt, and examining it twice daily is sound advice. It might even be applicable to other artistic processes, as well. I'm one to put incomplete demos on a shelf, and re-examine them, months or years later. If it's still appealing to me, then I proceed to finish it. There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to expect more of themselves, starting with one's own self.

I got my first tattoo at 38 years old - a small sea-turtle petroglyph that I got while vacationing in Hawaii. It was a spur of the moment thing, but I don't regret it at all. When I go back to Hawaii with my wife in March, I might get something added to it.

My second tattoo, I thought about for a long time, and worked on sketches of for nearly a year. When I came up with the final design I wanted, I took it to a local artist recommended by a well-inked and trusted friend, and had him ink me up. The design includes things that will never go out of favor with me - my daughters' names and my father's initials. The dove represents my MIL who was one of the most wonderful humans I've ever known. When my mom passes, I am planning to add a second dove.

Here's kind of a funny story...
After my first daughter was born in 1998, I talked about getting her name tattooed on my body. My wife was a little upset that I would not also get her name tattooed on me. She also didn't like my comment that "my daughter will always be my daughter, but there is no guarantee that we will always be married". Less than 2 years later, she was my ex-wife.

Permanent appearance alterations are best done on a whim. I am very satisfied with the boob job I got that afternoon when I was bored.

No one has ever been unhappy with boobs though. They're boobs: unarguable. Tattoos depend on taste. Breasts are the symbol of all that is good and well.

I'm one of those evil, souless, horrible moral lacking atheists anyway guys, so I am pretty spiritually guilt free with coloring in the canvas which is my body, If I so choose.

And if I prove to be wrong about all of this religious stuff, well I can ONLY assume The man upstairs will LOVE Fender too.

I mean why else would he have created Leo Fender? Duuuhhh!

I'm sure if he, & I were to meet, he'd see the tattoo of the Fender on me, and start going on with a long self appreciation speech about how he was the "Real" creator of the Fender bass, and how Leo was simply a credit stealing pawn, only used to get the job done.

I like this idea about hanging the image up and going with it ONLY if I still like it after a year.

However, I bought this bass February 16th/17th of last year.
I still play it everyday.
I'm still obsessive over it.
I still feel humbled by my good fortune.
I still feel like it'll never leave me.
I am still shocked that that bass literally lead to me putting down guitar, & taking up bass full time.

Started actually playing it about 2-3 months after buying it. So not quite a year playing yet.
But the love is definitely there.
So isn't that kinda the same?

Sure some of the Packer fans will like this. A buddy of mine. A bit much if you ask me.

Basses come and go. So, unfortunately, do many relationships.

If you get a tattoo, make sure you're ready for it to be there for a lifetime - through all your life changes, through relationships, through jobs - through everything.

To me, that restricts the appropriate tattoos to a very, very small set. That's why I have one (1), as noted earlier - and it will be the only one I ever have.

Meh, if you've got the bug just go for it. If you avoid girls names or anything blatantly offensive or juvenile the worst case is you'll learn to ignore it once you get tired of it....and the novelty WILL wear off. I don't especially regret any of my ink but if I had it to do over again I would probably spend the money on cool shoes instead.

No he's not really pushing me into it, more joking around, he really doesn't care if I get one or 50 or none.

Can't decide, need help!
Sorry, I'm really just venting somewhere I know I can.

If you can't decide what to get but still feel you need a tatoo for some reason then you should get this one:
